Now which bird are Eutelsat going to deploy at 28E as Afghansat 1??

Under the multi-year agreement, Eutelsat will deploy an in-orbit satellite from February 2014 to 48° East to deliver full national coverage and extensive reach of Central Asia and the Middle East. The satellite will be officially called AFGHANSAT 1 by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, reflecting Afghanistan’s entry into the commercial satellite business.

Eut 48A & C are clapped out & inclined so unlikely to be those 2.

Eut 28B maybe as that one is no longer needed at 28E?

Or maybe Eut 33A which is to be retired from 33E

33A is planned to move to 31 East in May, for Turksat.
28B could be, but why not 28A, now that we know that Eutelsat will use SES bandwidth on 28 East ?

I discounbted 28A simply because the press release says the sat will be slotted in February.

I thought things would be tight getting the remaining 28A tp's relocated to the SES craft & the bird moved.

i personally think eutelsat should give up/sell their rights at 28.5e.. are there still the 2 half knackered craft at 16east? or have they been redeployed?maybe they could use one of those for 48east

They have given up on 28E. They are planning to rent space off Astra 2E/2F/2G once 28A leaves.

The move of Eutelsat 28B to 48 East has begun.
Current TLE #893 has 28B at 30 East now, and at 48 East on 24 February.

With this morning's TLE #895, 28B is near 34 East and would be at 48 East on 16 February already.
By the way, there it will become Eutelsat 48D, Afghansat 1 being the alternative name.

Seems odd they havent reused 48B seeing as thats what 28B was before she slotted at 28E....

EUTELSAT 48D / AFGHANSAT 1 .

The EUTELSAT 48D satellite, formerly EUTELSAT 28B, is being repositioned at 48° East where it will deliver extensive coverage of Afghanistan and Central Asia.

The satellite has been co-branded AFGHANSAT 1 following an agreement between Eutelsat and the Afghanistan Ministry of Communications & Information Technology and will be used to enhance deployment of Afghanistan’s national broadcasting and telecommunications infrastructure as well as its international connectivity.

AFGHANSAT 1 will support a wide range of services including broadcasting, mobile telephony backhaul and IP connectivity, providing access to ICT and broadcast services to Afghans especially in unserved areas.

Launch date: 20/12/08
Launch details: Ariane 5 ECA

Just a reminder, although still awaiting a TLE for confirmation, Eutelsat 48D / Afghansat 1 really should be in place by now!
Perhaps not exactly at 48.0 East, where the inclined 48C still resides.

Maybe this is its beacon, quite a bit past Azerspace 46E, definitely at or near 48E. Very weak here though.
Can't see any sign of life of 48A 0r 48C's beacons to be confused with, well off arc I suppose.

Yesterday's TLE confirms Eutelsat 48D is stable at about 48.05º East.
