BBC Worldwide has just relaunched digitally remastered Doctor Who episodes on Facebook, making them available for rent in Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and the United States. This is the first time the corporation has taken on this kind of endeavour, being prompted to do so by fan requests.

Commercial boss at BBC Worldwide, John Smith said: “As we have grown internationally, we've seen through our Facebook channel that fans who are loving the series are asking for a guide into our rich Doctor Who back catalogue... We see this service as a perfect way to give our fans what they want, as well as a great way for them to get their fix between now and the autumn when Series Six continues.”

Opening up their archives, BBC is offering a selection of nine stories, which are spread out over several episodes. Among these include the very first episode, which was first telecasted in 1960 on terrestrial British TV. Some of the popular episodes that are being made available are Silence in the Library, Tomb of the Cyberman, and End of the World.

Viewers can rent their selected shows through Facebook credits, which can be acquired through the 'payments tab' or through Facebook games. Facebook credits are a secure and trusted form of payment, and once the transaction has been made, the show will be available for viewing (online streaming on Facebook's platform) for 48 hours. The only drawback is that viewers will have to turn off the HTTPS protocol, which is what allows secure browsing. Facebook users should be used to this by now, however, because it is often done for other Facebook applications.

In his statement, Smith said: “Our approach to Facebook and other leading edge platforms is to be right there alongside them in fostering innovation.” He continued on to say that apart from Facebook, which they will continue to use when marketing and selling events and content, they also intend on using many different platforms as events become a bigger part of the business. In the works are a launch of a fully international version of BBC iPlayer, a bigger games portfolio, and making The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, which is yet to be released on DVD, available on Facebook as well.

When BBC World wide published its annual report for the year, showing pre-tax profits, it was revealed that the Doctor Who franchise had revenues climb by 49pc. This was following its significant growth in the United States. The report also revealed that the Top Gear, another of BBC Worldwide's five power brands, and Doctor Who have more than 11.8 million fans on Facebook, and their websites average 68 million visitors per month.

The online market has really helped BBC Worldwide's revenues, pushing it up to £1.16bn, as revealed in the report. Though there are other factors involved, sales from digital activities greatly helped the company's debt fall from £102.6m to £52.3m.
