Lying in bed last night and trying to visualize how I might mount my recently aquired 1.3 m ally gibby ..in limited space and an avoid obstruction ..I came up with this ..rather silly Idea ...and I'm just bouncing it off you guys ..

A custom steel bracket assembly to mount on the PFs robust polar mount to lift a mount pole higher than the PF an thus provide a mount point for the gibby ..

Which if it was viable ..would in theory track the arc with the gibby mounted more vertically than the PF ...but of course the PF mount and actuator .(which would have to be upgraded to the most substancial available)..and experience greater wind loading ..

The question is ..

Is it even viable ..? what do you guys think..

??

Trying to think outside the box as usual..

Well ..its only a germ of an idea at this point Zorch ...and the actual construct would be more substantial than what I've drawn ...
I always err on the side of overkill ...
The drawing was just to give an idea of what I envisaged ..
I can't see why the gibby wouldn't track the arc though ...and would have to be parked due South in strong winds ...so the dish / mount would be upright ..
But ..the same system driving the PF would also be driving the Gibby ..and no polar mount needed ..
If only I could weld ..
A skill I lack..

A nice idea! Certainly out of the box (or out of mind?). It could work if the metal work is substantial enough. Would the jack arm be strong enough to cope with the extra weight?

Fabricating a new bracket isn't a problem. Just make up what you want from a piece of cardboard/platic sheet and take it to you local metal works place. They'll gladly make up the metal equivalent for you.

I expect the extra physical weight of approx 25 - 30kg kg (dish plus brackets)wouldn't be an issue for the system as is ..especially if I put a bigger ..more powerful actuator arm on Christina..
After all these jacks can drive bigger dishes ...including the alcoa with original extension wings in Ally ..not fibre glass as mine are.
I'm really more concerned about wind loading as I'd then have 2 wind sails as a target ..but again ..the actual surface area wouldn't be more than a 1.8 alcoa with genuine wings in metal.
Bizzare definately ..
out of my 'box' ..probably ..
..but doable...???
Anybodies guess :D

I know you've got decent and supportive neighbours, old bean, but are you not getting into potential Planning issues - just one snitch or an observant Council bod. Don't queer your pitch with Christina.

You raise a fair point Gordon ...
Its sooo frustrating though ..to have what you think is a good idea ..but to have it firmly stamped upon by a jobsworth potentially..
No wonder this country is in such a mess when innovation is so severly penalised.
Idea ..is now off the table ..
Sadly
:(
common sense prevailing..
Sadly
:(

...and yet if I were are famous 'artist' and wanted to construct a giant metal 'helter skelter' in the middle of the east end of London ...I'd probably get backing and plaudits from the local Mayor
such is life..

Don't let me deter you - just wondered if the proclivities of others had crossed your mind!

I well recall our friend Gary who not only had paint or some such poured over his motor but also got jobbed by the Council (At whose prompting, we never established).

Fair enough Gordon ..but as you rightly pointed out ..
Christina is so precious to me ..and so much of my heart and soul went into her installation and subsequent resurrection after the accident ...I'm not sure I wouldn't fall to bits myself if I was ordered to dismantle her.
cheers for bringing me back to reality ..
...not that it's much fun in this dimension..

Here is an idea,
Since you have such nice neighbors, why not ask them to install the dish in their back garden?
You could even pass them on an additional cable if they are intrested in watching TV.

Butter get back on the currant subject, or they'll think we're nuts.

The piggyback polarmount idea is sound in theory, the dishes however will always be tracking the same orbital slot, and very few satellites are interesting at both bands.

I'd be inclined to extend the pole up above the roofline, put Christina on the top for full coverage and install the Gibby below on its own actuator.

...Spent most of this relatively dry afternoon ..playing silly burgers with the Gibby ...just to see what I _might_ get away with ..

Came to the conclusion it might just squeeze in mounted lower than the PF ...in front of it an roughly the height of a garden table ..

at the height it currently is ..the PF just clips the top of the Gibby reducing signal on TPC (Cband) by about 0.4db ..but then once mounted the Gibby could always be turned to face west thus edge on to the PF ..

I'm guessing I'll have a fairly generous view of the western arc from the Gibbys perspective ..and a portion on the Eastern arc ..but not sure it will see over the wall past about 30 East..but its possible ..I think..

..and yes that is a Cband lnb on the Gibby ..giving about 50% transponders at 5 west ..so it sees over the wall ok ..

So I'm considering a full polar mount and an 18 inch jack ...when I have saved up some pennies..

what I really need to get me started is a pole with square base I can bolt to the paving slabs ..roughly where the table is in the picture..

Who needs a patio ?

I'd only fill it with building materials anyway ;)

Here are some pics I took today..

Maybe someone with a trade account with the major suppliers could look it up shouldn't be too expensive.

do you know anyone who can weld one for you as you could make it to your spec eg wider bottom plate and support pieces ?

Does nobody bother you with what you already have up.
