BT denies being 'up in arms' over BBC iPlayer

BT has quickly distanced itself from reports that it is part of a group of internet service providers seeking to challenge the BBC over its iPlayer. It said it has no concerns over the bandwidth traffic likely to be created by consumers watching iPlayer programmes online, and denied recently approaching BBC new media head Ashley Highfield to express concerns along with Carphone Warehouse and Tiscali. It did not, however, deny reports that BT Retail boss Ian Livingston recently met with his opposites at the other two ISPs to discuss the issue.

It comes as the scale of the potential problem was highlighted by a new study by the Online Publishers Association that found that consumers spend almost half their time online reading and watching content, up by around a third from four years ago.

BT nevertheless told technology web site The Register: "Whilst we've been fingered as 'part of the gang' in certain press reports, BT is not complaining about or discussing the implications of iPlayer with the BBC.

"We're not up in arms about iPlayer, we're not complaining to the BBC or discussing it with them."

The spokesman added that BT's only concern was that customers be aware that the Kontiki P2P distribution system that the iPlayer requires to run in the background would eat up their monthly bandwidth allocations even when they were not watching or downloading content.
