BVN returns on Astra1 but stops on Hotbird
BVN is a TV channel in which the Dutch and Flemish public broadcasters NPO and VRT work together. The channel is available online worldwide and can also be viewed via satellite in large parts of the world. The programming consists of its own programs that have been commissioned by NPO and VRT. National news events can also often be followed live. BVN is mainly viewed by expats and holidaymakers abroad.

René van Baaren - channel manager of BVN - states that BVN will return to Astra1 satellite upon popular demand. "With the Astra 1M Wide Beam in terms of coverage - Europe, Middle East and North Africa - BVN has found an alternative to the Hotbird, the contract of which will expire soon. By using a different encoder technology on the Astra, it is possible to broadcast with less bandwidth without loss of quality. ”

According to the channel manager, finances played an important role in the decision to leave the Astra1 satellite two years ago. "The new encoder technology has made financial returns to the Astra satellite possible again. Unfortunately, this was not possible two years ago and budget cuts forced us to stop using the Astra 1L. Satellite." Since the expiring Hotbird satellite distribution agreement will not be renewed, satellite distribution through this satellite will be discontinued in late May.

Despite the fact that BVN continues to broadcast in SD, an HD satellite receiver is required to receive the TV channel via Astra1 satellite. This has to do with the use of DVB-S2 broadcast technology. In practice, this does not cause many problems because most satellite viewers have been using an HD receiver for a long time. The Astra1 satellite has been used more than Hotbird by Dutch and Flemish satellite viewers. This is mainly due to the duo and triple LNB that are supported by Canal Digitaal and TV Vlaanderen. The wide range of German public and commercial TV and radio channels and the many international news channels makes Astra1 a more interesting satellite than Hotbird
