Evening

I'm sure someone posted something like this somewhere at sometime, but here goes:

For "various reasons" I want to convert strings of hexadecimal numbers like (completely random with no significance at all :D) "99 08 86 27 E4 66" to decimal, or VV, I could use my hand-calculator, or an online converter programme to do that - one group at a time, and that's very laborious, time-consuming and prone to errors (especially by me!).

Therefore I looked for a online programme that will convert the complete string in one shot - and, after quite a number of false leads, I found this one which appears to do just what I would need for various "useful numbers"

Any thoughts, or alternatives?

Won't work well - I'm partially colour-blind, and I have difficulty counting in "large numbers" :D

You could just use the Windoes calculator. In programming view you can just convert hex into dez or bin.

Thanks - hadn't thought of that but now had a look. However, it looks like you have to manually enter the number, digit by digit, to be converted before it is converted, whereas on the site to which I pointed you just copy and paste it from "wherever" and hit the Decode button, and then copy the result back to "wherever".

Since that also refers to using the Windoze Calculator then it seems to have the same issues as I mentioned in response to mickwig's post.

Instead of colored beads use black and white marbles like I do, but don't too big a file as you can loose your marbles like I did when I tried to decode about 50,000 lines of hex.

Think I lost mine decades ago, which probably explains some of my inane posts here (and this may explain the current ones :D)

Have you tried one of those artificial intelligence machines, Siri , Alexa or Cortana to verify if they can read out an answer ?

Sounds like I would still have to "write the answer down" - instead of just copying it to "wherever". And, FWIW, don't want to get "involved" with "intelligent bots" until/unless I REALLY have to, which is not, I hope, YET!

Ah, I didn't understand this was to be absolutely autonomous.

Excel could be your friend then.
Dec2hex function and vice versa

As is my "wont" I hadn't thought of that either, but then again I'm not an EXCEL "expert" (just the very basic stuff - enough to keep a list of all my sources of income in order to do my tax returns - although I was a little more proficient a few years ago).

So, can you help with where I should start (in EXCEL 2010)?

OTOH it is probably something like shown here: DEC2HEX function - Office Support (and, presumably, there is another function to perform the reverse)

For a complete set of numbers try MS Excel: HEXINDEZ, HEXINBIN or DEZINHEX, DEZINBIN. You can jus copy a row of numbers and then copy and paiste the formula. Althoung in the english version the formula might be slightly different.

Converting hexadeciaml to decimal (and the other way around) is programmatically dead easy.
It's just a matter of packaging this in a tool.

So let me get this straight: You need to copy a string consisting of two-digit hexadecimal values separated by white-space into an equivalent string of decimal values separated by white-space. The input string must be pasted from somewhere else (ahem), and the output needs to be copied for pasting into something else (ahem).
I assume all this happens in Windows 7,8, or 10.
Errors in the hexadecimal input string will simply yield 0 values in the decimal string.

If that is what you need, I can slap something together wihtin a day or two that does the above, once I've swapped a working PSU into my old development PC...

Many thanks for the offer (and it would be run on a W7 or W10 machine) - could be useful, but not sure if it is worth your effort because the site I pointed to in Post #3 actually already appears to do that successfully.
