I found out the other day that the testing station at Broadstairs has all gone and there is a supermaket on the site . But things have changed so much over the years in the old days it was the surplus shops down Lisle Street and Edgware road buying 19 sets with a 807 in the PA or if you were rich you had a Codar AT5 .
When I was a Marconi Apprentice in Chelmsford I often popped into Town to trawl Edgware Road and Tottenham Court Road. Henry's was a favourite haunt.
Been there and done that at various times - but never came across "ladies" like those in Lisle Street, so I think you possibly "missed out" on "something"! :-rofl2

Yes I do remember those places above the radio shops in Lisle Street before the police moved in and closed them down , Yes I remember Henry plus there was a shop called GW smiths thats when you could buy a 19set for a few bob . Now days there about £300 and not working .

Yes the good old days of valves , Ok does any one know what this valve is for ? Its about 3 times the size of a 813 . I did my RAE in Chelmsford .

Is Valve A the same as Valve B?

Valve B seems to be marked "CV16?" - and so this list indicates that it would have been CV161 and was part of the "CV118-161" series because that series stops at "161". If so, then it would be a photocell.

Yes its the same Valve but the only ID is what is on the side of the valve and that seems to be coming off 3 contacts on the bottom and one at the top like a anode but I have no idea what its used for . I was told it came from a coast radio station but it must of high power from the look of the valve .

As I said, according to that list it's photocell - it was the UK "Common Valve" ("CV") equivalent of a commercial valve called the VS26, and apparently dates from the 1930's. More data and data sheets on both types here CV161 @ The Valve Museum.

In the very early days of photosensitive devices such a device would have to be large to collect enough photos for the first stage of further amplification. Not sure what it could have been used for in military applications, but maybe to detect when a beam of light - such as when a searchlight was briefly interrupted by something like an aircraft, and thus triggering some form of "alert", or maybe detecting when a high-power transmitting valve was glowing more brightly than it should and thus was overheating??

Slightly OT, but we bought a new Drawing Room HiFi recently - when in C***r*s the spotty oik was extolling the virtues of Amps with Valve output stages and seem utterly bewildered when I told him it was good to see them being brought back into use ......

Back on original thread, got an advertising email from Radio Enthusiast, which publishes Radio User and Practical Wireless mags, to say that the June issue of the latter has an article on "Preparing for your amateur radio exam"

Excellent. Mind you I would have been surprised if you hadn't passed.

Blimey hf tranceiver equipment is pricey these days! Even on the bay of fleas stuff is going for silly money.

So got my licence & call sign powered up the Baofeng vhf walkie talkie I picked up cheap to play with - and there is absolutely no activity round here at all - the bands are completely dead!
