Diesel does go off. Google pseudomonas and cladisporium resinae, which can appear after a while if the conditions are right

I was about to post that you could put in a litre or two of the Shell high grade diesel fresh out of the pumps which is about the cleanest stuff you can get.

You could also book an MOT with the council MOT facility in say Croydon or Reading so you have to drive a reasonable distance to get there.

I wouldn't drive that far, especially to an unknown garage.

Buying quality diesel ? I've got two jerrycans of chip oil out the back

Yep, we had diesel engine runaway at our place , generally when a turbo oil seal has gone , oil gets into the intercooler and induction system and the engine runs on the hot oil aswell as the diesel. A quick stall is your best chance of saving it. Best thing that could have happened to that previa.

It's normal to have a small amount of oil in the intercooler and pipes - all my Pugs had a bit inside the pipes with no issues.

Not quite, the weather has been somewhat rotten on the days when I have time to change the filters, and there is also another small issue with the glowplug circuitry, either a sensor or the relay (sealed unit), meaning to start it in the morning I open the bonnet and short out the relay contacts. I have a week or so before the tax expires and will plan the repair and booking accordingly.

I used to have an old Astra Turbo diesel estate with 350K on it which used to fill the street up with a large cloud of smoke when it started from cold and also when you floored it.

I just used to turn the fuel mixture down until it had about as much go in it as a vicars handshake. It went through the emissions test for three years until the floor pan fell out of it. There wasn't really anything wrong with it as such, it was just a smokey engine. It pulled like a train and would do over 100 mph with out too many issues. It didn't burn oil either. Even with a brand new fuel pump it still smoked.

As for taking it for a run before the test it also helps to clear the particulate filter in the exhaust which works better when the exhaust system is hot. Also diesel doesn't go off, although if a vehicle is not used for a long time you can sometimes get condensation build up in the tank if there is a constant change in temperature. Just make sure after the vehicle has ran for a while that you drain the water from the fuel filter before taking it to the test station.

Make sure you also thrash the crap out of it before turning the fuel down just before taking it to the MOT station

A little yes-but ive seen engines spin up after a turbo replaced and an intercooler not drained and washed of oil from the previous turbo bang.

The Astra vans used Isuzu engines did they not ?

And where would the fuel 'turn downs' be on a Citroen BX 1.7 TDi/ Xantia 1.9 TDi or ZX 1.9 non Turbo ?

Some astra vans had a low pressure turbo vaux engine, but most had the isuzu engine, good engine that. Used to love do the timing belts on those-a real nice job.

No my Astra had a the GM low blow engine in. I always found it a better engine than the Isuzu one. My old Cavalier 1.7d which was GM powered is still going strong after i gave it to my mechanic as payment for getting my old 406 through the MOT after the diesel pump failed on the old Cav. Its nearly on the 500k mark now on the original engine albeit with a new diesel pump.

The fuel turn down bit you refer to is usually behind a sealed plastic cap on the side of the pump. It also depends if your car has a common rail setup or not.
