Hello all I havent been involved in the scene for about 15 years , I'm semi retired now so thought i would explore whether its worth blowing the cobwebs away. I have a dusty old Humax 5400 and maybe a few Funcards and maybe my elvis is still about , but is any of it useful or should i move on. I used to watch sport , films and animal stuff and cartoons for the kids ( but they're grown up now lol ) I also used a motor but most likely would be static these days unless i really get the bug again. Any advice valued.

There's no harm in plugging in the 5400 to a dish outside and see what you can receive with it.

The cards & hacking stuff is obsolete - everything has been tightened up and the fun days of multip,e providers being open on files is long gone

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
TBH, you could do far worse than follow the advice that William-1 gave in post #2, and it won't cost you very much - OTOH, not much FTA sport on satellite nowadays, except from foreign sources that will need something like that receiver and maybe a steerable dish if you don't use on-line streaming services (many of which can be accessed by that receiver).

52E often had FTA sports, on their Turkmenistan Sports channel, and others.
On 19.2E you could get Sport 1 Germany, and Eurosport Germany, both FTA and although using DVB-S the picture quality wasn't too bad.

the German FTA channels on Astra 19 E have a lot of sports! Not only eurosport, any popular channel may have it
Check TV.de to know what they are showing, just choose the "sport" option on their search engine

You need to learn how to set up your motorised system if you use DiSEqC 1.2 you will have to set up & save each satellite position otherwise it will not work.

If you use DiSEqC 1.3 USALS your set up has to be accurate or you will experience weak or no signals on some satellites.

Don't blame the equipment the SX88+ is excellent & good value.

I don't think you'll find anything better for under £60. I'm not a feed hunter and use the box (via USALS) on my motor. True it can be a bit quirky and takes a little time to set up but it's probably one of the best STB's I've owned.

I fully agree with both of the above - my only gripes about the SX88 & SX88 (don't know about the Optima version) are that:
- Compared with some other receivers, they are a bit slow to change channels on the same satellite
- I have always had problems with stopping recordings after they have been started, and I'm not sure why as the "stop recording" function doesn't appear "obvious" - ??

The 2 best receivers in my vast collection are getting on a bit like me :)
TM6902HD probably the best all round satellite receiver still available on some sites for £239,

The best satellite receiver for feed hunting is the TM5502 HD,
When it was released the software was terrible if you do a factory reset then look at the database you will see what I mean,
So I contacted TM & threatened to return the receiver & give it a very bad review,
After a few weeks they agreed with me & over the next 2 weeks they thoroughly re-wrote the software to my specifications,:):Y
What we have now with the TM5502HD is a lot better for feed hunting still a few quirks when you come out of a scan the last transponder changes polarity but this as good as it gets as TM dropped all support for their receivers after this :(:N
