Just received a pretty much standard spec letter from my dear friends at S.P. regarding the dim wits wanting to supply and fit Smart meters at my home. The way its written makes it sound like there's no choice and that I should phone them right away. I really feel sorry for older people who get letters like these from b@$t@rd$ like them, basically being scared into quick action and then having to deal with the consequences afterwards. I mean in the left hand banner section at the top there's a ! Mark in a red circle and to the side its wrote "Action required". Well action was actioned my man, I ripped and placed in the bin......idiots.

Just switched my SP Tariff to head off the forthcoming big rise in Leccy costs for two years.

Not got the Smart Meter letter yet, though.

I agree they're not necessary - as long as folk are aware anything resembling a Water 'Otter is going to be greedy, that'll suffice.

I love the way the "Free" word is used as often as possible, they never state the fact that these meters are not "free" just there fitting for them to then charge you at a higher rate. Rupert Murdoch should take note! lol

That doesn't stop SP, or any other Supplier, from hiding the opt-out, as in this case.

Heavens, some people think it illegal to receive any Satellite Channels without a Sky Subscription.

You're quite right that it's not compulsory (yet!) but it's worded so that you might think that it is.

I don't think it's bogus.

making it compulsory would be violating human rights

That you're right is not in dispute. That isn't what I said. I was pointing out that it doesn't stop Suppliers concealing the fact.

Indeed, as implied in my first response to the OP, I myself will be declining one when my letter arrives.

I do commend you to read Members' contributions carefully, else we end up going round in circles.

Many things can be made compulsory by a change in law. Violating human rights doesn't come in to it.

It also said one of these Actavo agents may show up at my door in a kind of "just at the off chance" situation because their in the area. Well that's good for them because the door won't even be answered to them [emoji23]

Just another potential source of EMI in an increasingly radio unfriendly world. It'll take a change in the law before I have one fitted here.

Even though it is not compulsory, the mere threat that it might be 'administered at no charge' should persuade them.

Pmsl, the Scottish version of the "stand your ground" law in the states, just open the door to the idiot shouting "he's coming right for me" then stick the severe "malky" on his nose from a running start lol[emoji23]

I would be concerned if there being set up in the same way as in the united states, with one house being the main broadcast station for all the other "nodes" in the neighborhood, f that!

Sounds similar to the way our FWA Broadband is arranged.

Those clowns at SP cant even get our bills right. After no end of hassle over a year we finally got an agreed bill (considerably in our favour as far as we can work out) which was paid in December

The meter was read the first couple of days of January - and no sign of any bill yet again. So I guess the whole bloody palaver starts again..

Sounds like my experience with them, twice I have setup a direct debit with them and not once has it ever been collected in over a year now, don't worry people I'm not one of these complete idiots that act like their getting free energy until what ever crappy system rights itself then asks them for £1900 or the like with 7 days to pay! Lol, I have been paying it manually via their equally crap site, I shall be writing a nice email to the ombudsman services in relation to their gawd awful treatment of my account.
