Hi all, I am thinking of investing in a large dish system to try and receive free UK tv in northeast Bulgaria. Has anyone got any info or is anyone getting freeview in eastern europe.

As for large dishes, what is your budget and how much land can you spare for the installation ?

@GlynF Welcome to the Forum! I think you will need at least 5m solid dish to get some (not all) transponders from spot beam. Also be ready to "enjoy" not 24h reception.

Space for a dish is not an issue, Planning for a 5m dish may be, budget on the other hand is more limited. Older post on here suggest its possible with a 3mdish and I was wondering if that was still the case.

In some cases (depends on location) 3m could be enough to start with. In your case you are far away from official footprint, I would say about the same as my location. And for me 4.6m antenna provides some reception of spot beam from Astra 2E, but not all transponders and not all receivable are in 24-hour mode. Reception with 3m dish would certainly perform worse.

We have a reception report with 2.1 m antenna in southern Romania.

Thanks satesco and other Contributers, 2.1m and only about 150Km north of me. Sounds promising. If anybody could suggest a, not too expensive receiver, I would appreciate it, I have a spare VMade pluto s9.

Any Free to Air receiver with a good tuner will do for Freesat. Around 70Euros including delvery though some rate the early CI receivers which have more bells and whistles in them.

Don´t Forget These Reports are from End 2018. Before they made a FEC Change. I´m in the eastern part of Austria and Need
a 2,4 m Offset Dish for postitive reception from the Spotbeam.

Which channels do you want and how much are you willing to invest? (with no guarantee of success). My own personal opinion is you have next to no chance of any spotbeam HD channels with any sensible sized dish. Spotbeam SD channels. Well unlikely but stranger things have happened if you happen to be under a lobe of slightly higher power.

Dont take any notice of what possible a few towns away - in extreme fringe reception conditions received downlink powers can and do vary over a few km. However its all guesswork. You might get lucky - but prepare for disappointment

Analoguesat, just the bog standard ITV,BBC etc. I am lucky at the moment to have unlimited download/upload via my internet supplier,at a very reasonable price, which allows me to download programmes previously shown and watch them later, this is impractical with live events like sport as the satellite internet connection can be a bit ropey at times, hopping, skipping and freezing, which also rules out IPTV. I just thought that a large one-off payment might solve my problem.

You might be better off looking at the BBC Satback channels on 27.5W. Encrypted but fairly easy to open with the right kit. No idea what the reception is like of Intelsat-907 in Bulgaria but its worth looking at

Still another spot beam, but as you say encryption is not such a big deal.

I can tell you right now, trust and believe. No way in hell, Intelsat's 907 spot beam is receivable in Eastern Europe, the footprint is so tight it hurts. In Greece some tests I'm aware of showed that even a 4m dish will struggle, in some cases even Astra2's UK spotbeam is easier in very large dishes.
And if IS901 has the same footprints, we're doomed!
