It's interesting that your XP version is the "Embedded" one - I'm guessing that MS kept releasing updates to that for a long time after it stopped releasing updates for consumer versions because it was used in many industrial "embedded" systems.
The majority of cash machines using XP were part of the reason.

AAH! and there's me interpreting CH's comments regarding the "XP pos" as meaning that "XP piece of sh1t" :-rofl2.

I now plead "Not Guily M'Lud" as I wasn't around the forum in 2014 (only came back again in mid 2015) and never saw/wondered about how this thread came to exist.:)

WinXP Embedded has now fallen out of support. Bad news for Tesco as I noticed their cash registers were still XP Embedded yesterday :-lmao

Been collecting legacy laptops lately, as some software I use that access the serial port etc will only run on 16 bit Dos/Windows 98 and others on XP.
Picked up a Acer Netbook for £10 in a second hand shop and put XP on it, did this trick with the registry and it's still pulling updates down :)

One of the main reasons I keep the older machines running is for proper RS232. Can't use putty without it.

Out of curiosity, I've just looked around to see if there is a similar registry hack for Windows 7 POS-Embedded, but couldn't find anything and only a comment that if/when MS releases "something" to the embedded market then it might become available to the rest of us - so, has anyone found anything else?

I still require 16bit DOS and direct serial addressing, just got a Win98 laptop for this very purpose.
