My Satellite Setup
Sky dish connected to Humax HB1100s. Toshiba TV.
My Location
Stowmarket, Suffolk.
Hello all, I'm in need of some advice please. I have my dish aligned to Astra 2 and it's fine with my Humax box. I have now bought a Toshiba smart TV with built in satellite receiver but I just can't get it to see my dish. I have been onto Toshiba support but they say that the satellite receiver is not designed for UK. This makes no sense to me. What possible difference does it make if I'm in the UK or a few miles away in Belgium or France?
Can anyone help please?
Many thanks,
Anthony.

Thanks.

You might have to be patient as, being a hobbyist Forum, people who might be able to give you a definitive response dip in and out on an unpredictable basis.

But, in general terms, you're right that it shouldn't matter that you're in the UK as the Satellite Receiver should be generic DVB S in nature, at its core.

If I had to guess, you might not have correctly set Antenna Type (Direct?) and LNB Config. And you'd probably need to edit the Transponder List.

However, you mention a Sky Dish ..... was this previously used for traditional Sky or the new-fangled Sky Q (That said, I note you have a Humax Freesat box)

Check first that the teleivsion has the power enabled on the satellite tuner for the LNB.

If the teleivsion model has not been subsidised by Freesat (ie, has no logo on the bezel) then the satellite will be received but you will have to search for 28.2 degrees and the list of channels will be sorted by transponder and name, but not by content in English.

Thanks for your thoughts, much appreciated. I think I may be getting somewhere. I'm in the setup menu and it says: satellite position 1 Astra2 then I have user band 1 and then band frequency 0 . At the bottom is Reference transponder 10714/H/22000.

That's the very first Transponder on the list for 28E

Here is the full list FlySat Astra 2E/2F/2G @ 28.2° East

Hi Lazarus, any idea what values should be entered in User band and Band frequency? Unfortunately the sticker on the LNB is faded and unreadable but it's a 4 out and is the one that was on the Sky dish. Cheers.

Sorry, no - I don't really comprehend Toshiba's terminology here: If you can't suck it and see, you might have to wait until someone with specific Toshiba knowledge pops up.

However, assuming the LNB is a Universal Quad, the relevant LNB settings should be along the lines of "Universal 9750/10600"

Hi, this where I've got to. I have changed the LNB to a single output Fortec Star FSK UVN. Again it's perfect on the Humax box so I know it's working. Any ideas?
All the best.

What Options are there when you click on User Band and Band Frequency respectively?

I suspect this is one of those problems we could solve in two minutes flat if we had the Toshiba at our fingertips, but it ain't easy doing it remotely!

Hi, User band goes from 1 to 8
Band frequency needs the values entered.
I'm very grateful for your help buddy.

Sadly, I'm none the wiser - we need a fellow Toshiba owner now, for sure.

Assuming there's nothing in the operating manual (even if you manage to get one that is of ANY use nowadays - many, including that for our current LG are totally useless for anything that's in the very least "complicated"), then

"User band" could mean that the receiver is capabale of selecting 1 of 8 LNBs connected to an 8-way "DiSEqC 1.1" LNB selection switch - in which case it won't matter what you select if the cable runs direct to the Sky LNB on the dish (which I assume it does) and no such switch is fitted.

"Band Frequency" probably means, for Freesat, the normal Satellite Ku-band downlink frequency range , which is 10.7 GHz (10,700MHz) to 12.75 GHz (12,750MHz)

BTW: we had several older Tosh TV's with sat tuners, but they could only handle DiSEqC 1.0 4xLNB switching, and the setup was so awkward - and the actual day-to-day operation was almost impossible to remember - that I completely gave up on using those sat tuners !

Looking through the manual you need to find the 'antenna type' menu and change it from 'single satellite cable' to 'direct satellite'.

I read that this morning when first replying and it doesn't help at all!

Reminiscent of car maintenance manuals that say "To remove the Engine, simply remove the Engine"

Sounds like a good plan.

This is what I get from the manual.

Satellite: If Satellite broadcast search option is turned on, the TV will search for digital satellite broadcasts after other initial settings are completed

There are three types of antenna selection. You can select Antenna Type as Direct, Single Satellite Cable or DiSEqC switch by using “left arrow” or “right arrow” buttons.• Direct: If you have a single receiver and a direct satellite dish, select this antenna type. Press OK to continue. Select an available satellite on the next screen and press OK to scan for services. • Single Satellite Cable: If you have multiple receivers and a single satellite cable system, select this antenna type. Press OK to continue. Configure settings by following instructions on the next screen. Press OK to scan for services.• DiSEqC switch: If you have multiple satellite dishes and a DiSEqC switch, select this antenna type. Press OK to continue. You can set four DiSEqC options (if available) on the next screen. Press OK button to scan the first satellite in the list.

Direct for a direct connection to a single LNB used for one receiver.

Single satellite cable, this is used for a multi output LNB, (2, 4 or 8 output LN:cool: one cable to each receiver.

Diseqc switch, use this if you have more then one LNB run into a Diseqc switch.
