Desktop...

Intel i7 8700K
ASRock Fatal1ty Z370 Gaming-ITX/ac
Intel UHD 630 iGPU
3x 24" BenQ BL2411
Samsung NVMe 256Gb SSD
2x Samsung 840 Pro 256Gb
2x Sandisk X110 256Gb
16Gb Ram

I did have 32Gb and a Asus Maxiumus X Hero but I didn't like the board and wanted a Phanteks Shift X case, so went ITX.

I've got a Thinkpad X240 and a X250, I might put one of those on Linux.
hmm...looks like Mint is playing catchup with that board, I would try different distros until one boots with graphics then go from there

As I said, Linux takes a little work but when you get one that works well you'll find it very satisfying (especially when you see it idling along using about 500MB RAM or less)

I don't believe Linux is fit for being a desktop OS. It has too many nuances and niggles for it to be reliable. I tried various flavours of Linux over many years but none fit the bill. Even the mighty Ubuntu sucks - I run the "update" on version 16 and it completely trashed the entire OS. It wouldn't even boot. The only way to recover was to reinstall.

If you have time on your hands and some computer knowledge (or at least an inclination to learn) - great. If you don't and you don't want to use Windows (and I don't blame you), get a Mac. Better yet, install MacOS on your PC - it is, after all, Unix based.
It's been fit for desktop use on all my computers for 6 years now with very little in the way of problems and Radeon or NVidia graphics - I'm no expert either - and reboots for updates? what's that? oh, right, Windows....

My experience is the reverse of yours. Happily running Ubuntu on a Lenovo and Debian on Pi's and openvix 5.1 on Technomate.

Yes, not much of an issue, even with UEFI replacing the original BIOS arrangements.

Yeah I pulled down the latest Kernel and still the same, I can't risk running in to issues like that. It needs to be a stable system, I can go messing around, compiling drivers and Kernels but not enough time in the day for it.

Also Thunderbolt 3 is an issue as well it seems :(

Yeah I've got a USB enclosure with an SSD in it and will try that in a bit.
Annoyingly Mint decided to put the grub boot loader on my main drive when I told it not to!

I use the XFCE desktop as it's very lightweight

Thanks, deffo worth a go :)
Arch is always bleeding edge but a bit tricky to install, so Manjaro is also a good option for the latest kernel and drivers etc being Arch based. It's also very easy to install

I use Arch or Debian on ARM embedded stuff, both have pro's and cons.
Not seen Manjaro, will have a look at that now :)

I ran just Linux (Crunchbang, Mint and Lubuntu) exclusively for a few years.

No Crunchbang any more, sadly, but I now have a Win 10 Tablet (Linx 1010) which is surprisingly good.

Frankly, having both, either on separate hardware or as dual-boot, is the best idea. Both have their advantage and their limitations.

All good things come to an end.

The Linx 1010 has suffered frequent random freezes for some time now, owing to incompatibility between Intel Graphics Driver and recent Windows "upgrades".

I persevered for a while because running Linux is problematic owing to the fact that the Linx uses 64 bit architecture except for the bootloader, which is 32 bit. Few Linux distros still come with 32 bit Bootloader, except Fedora, although it is possible to insert one manually. I tried Fedora and modified Ubuntu but was left with an issue whereby screen rotation worked, but touch didn't rotate with it!

This has been overcome with the very recently released Fedora 31 and I have now binned Windows completely (Again!).

I finally managed to wrangle MacBook from work recently so I'll be saying goodbye to the ghastly Surface laptop/tablet/monstrosity.

Linux is still unsuitable for day to day use. Ive been trying to get mint 19.2 to run dvds on an variety of old old laptop for one of the departments at work. What a complete and utter pita it is Wont run dvds without installing extra stuff - then when it does load it the dvd STILL wont work. Even the old fallback of installing vlc doesnt work properly although with much faffing around I finally got it to at least read the dvd menus. Although it wouldnt go any further.

If you cant even get an os to play a simple Clangers dvd its got no hope.

Interesting.

SWMBO and I both use Mint - chiefly her - without any issues whatsoever. And DVDs just work!

Mint is basically a drop-in replacement for Windows that anyone can use intuitively.

No such problems here either using Ubuntu Mate and Ubuntu XFCE depending on the system no Windows systems here.

Blu-rays play fine too!
