My Satellite Setup
Intending to set up a satellite installation in Italy
My Location
Umbria, Italy
Hi all, new to this forum. Shortly moving to Umbria in Italy (about 25km NE of Perugia). Keen to receive BBC channels etc but been getting conflicting advice about reception possibilities. have read on other bulletin boards that I should get 2D with a 2.4 mtr dish, but an installer in southern umbria says no chance mate. I am not keen to fork out for a large dish only to find I can only get channels I could have got with a 1 mtr dish or whatever.
I have 3 questions:
1. Does anyone have any knowledge of Astra 2D reception in Umbria?
2. Is it feasible to connect 2 smaller dishes (say 1.8 + 1.0 mtr) and sum the outputs in some way?
3. Is it feasible to hire a mobile dish to try it out first?

Thanks

Psychomet

1) Impossible to say apart from general info - extreme fringe reception isnt an exact science - there are "hot and cold spots" caused by minute imperfections in the reflector surface . Reception can and does vary greatly over a few miles. Local knowledge is always favoured over forum guesswork.

2) No - its possible at radio telescope wavelengths, but unless you want to spend many tens of thousands of Euros its impractical at household level.

3) Only if local installers will hire out their dishes!

You are being ridiculous, they never will as they have to minimise reception to the UK for legal reasons.

Any suggestions about dish size and the most cost effective dish if it's around 2.4 mtrs (when they get very expensive!)?

The Beeb ITV & C4 (and soon to be C5) dont care in the slightest if as few hundred thousand expats are inconvenienced.

If our TV is so important to you then move to Blighty or northwestern Europe where its easy to get. :D

Hi psychomet

I live 20 km south from Perugia and I can receive BB1, BB2, ITV 1 and soome more channels with a 1,80m dish from abot 12 am to 7 pm.
My dish is not in very good contidions, so I suppose with a better and bigger dish things can improve a lot.
A few days ago I bought a Humax foxsat receiver and it works much better than the old Panasonic TU-DSB 30.

Thanks Gio2010,

We should definitely stay in touch - email me.

Does anyone know anything about these fibreglass dishes - _www.pellini.org- I have been offered a 2.5mtr dish at a good price.

Thanks Topper, but your archive link doesn't seem to work. I have tried searching on 'Umbria' but nothing comes up.

Thanks for the correct reference Topper.

Apologies for the breach in rules - does anyone know anything about the Pellini dishes?

Thanks

I am not sure It can help you,
In my location Nord Tuscany close to Lucca with my disc 90 cm I receive the signal well but during the evening and night Itv3 and Itv2 have some problem.
During my test The quality change depending by the receiver.
I think the sensitivity of the receiver play an important role

Best regards
Luca

Hi a trick with user installation is to partially cover the dish with a material that will block signal back to L.N.B,even without signal strenth metre It gives the best possible alighment You will ever get from Your dish, also better to install on a really cloudy day.It makes self(but cheap)installation more difficult but totally sets dish at correct place within less than 1cm of absoulute perfect. On Sky box,s under signal test Strenght= left/right. Quality=Up/down,It is strange but signal strenth can be perfect but if signal quality is bad Many channels do not appear or freeze. Many so Called professional installers, are somewhat incompetant or careless,They dont know their Azz imuth from their elbow ! ;-)

hi to all
here Astra 2 d is no good even with a 4 meter dish.
but some can with a 1.20 meter dish.
no BBC we tried .

E-4 AT 11,565 V
C 4 AT 12,480 V
ITV AT 12,402 V

itv was on Astra 2 d and had transponder problems and went to Astra 2 c
but went encrypted with sky UK system
this was 2 months ago.

you can put this in the added channels and you must have a sky UK card active.

czech rep jihlava area 2.4 fortec dish zero signal on astra 2d

Ahoj,

im sorry your dish is very bad.
You need a Dish in one Piece like a Prodelin, Andrew, Patriot, Kathrein, Channel Master,....

A Friend receives in Austria ( farer away from the Beam as you ) Astra 2d with 2,3 m Solid Dish! (horizontal nearly everything and vertical with tropouts at 21.00 cet. )

Regards Montafon Guy!

There are some people getting Astra 2D in Venezia on 1.2m but it's on the very limit so indeed not to recommend if you've got space. 1.5m should be fine and 1.8m just ideal. Motorising latter will bring you also some other critical satellites/beams like Thor 5 T1. Just take care choosing high quality. For more information about reception conditions and installations in Italy i'd recommend this board: _http://www.digital-forum.it/forumdisplay.php?f=33
