Just a guess Gordon ...
..is the equilibrium point ...rear on to the wind direction ??

Funnily enough, I was outside checking where it had come to rest even as you enquired.

It is now edge on to the wind and presumably will auto-correct if there is a shift of wind direction.

Go figure!

Ok so I aimed east out towards the 68e area and the dish was violently moving and I didnt like the look of it so I`ve sent it back to 28 where a lot of the dish is exposed to the wind but it`s not rocking as bad

at least when it`s at 28 I`ll know it`s blew down when the TV stops working lol

Yep ..you probably found the 'sweet spot' ..relative to wind direction ...as this obviously can be deflected by a wall etc ...causing unforseen currents ..

In an Ideal world ..Id prefer to get mine at 90 degrees to the wind ....and rear on ...
..but of course the diseqc motors don't allow this ...so ...I compromise ..
Its a case of whatever works for you ..but wobble is imo the killer ...so finding a spot where this is minimal ..is probably key to dish survival ..
Good luck m8..

I`m going to keep an eye on it and if I can may set up CCTV to watch it if the winds keep up tonight

I do have to go out to my doctors shortly though but I think SWMBO will call me to ask why the sky has gone off or to tell me the sky isnt working as she normally does lol

With a bit of luck though all these nasty trees and bushes that block our lines of sight might be blown down, at least one can hope lol

Well I've been out again to investigate further and there are two air streams - one impinging directly and one deflected by an effective corner created by house/boiler house brickwork.

So, as you suggest, we must all plough our own furrow.

But, I agree with your disdain for "wobble" - it looks a lot worse than it probably is, though.

I'm in the rear end on camp too :-lmao Before I went to work I left it parked on 68.5E, sadly when I got back home it wasn't picking anything up so I've moved it round to 62E and can see something has slipped about 2°. Ah well, day off tomorrow so if it calms down I'll realign it once I've worked out if it's the motor on the pole or the dish on the motor or both. Bleedin typical as it was spot on too. Next time we get a blow like this I may just take the reflector off for the day, 2 minutes with a screwdriver and spanner and I wont have to worry about it. Strongest gust down here today has been 60MPH which is nothing compared to oop north, I see todays stage of the cycling tour of Britain has been cancelled due to the weather.

Left mine on 1west as the house is at an angle so the dish is side on.

Over the weekend I tried the back of dish to the wind and it was awful it moved about abit even though the wind wasn't as strong.

I don't really have any option other than to have quite a bit of pole above the gutter which tends to create a lot of wobble. I did think about guying the pole under the motor using some 500lb monofil and I also thought about drilling a couple of holes in the side rim of the Gib so I could tether it when it was this bad. I ended up doing neither as I suspect either or both could lead to bigger problems of the dish going out or even worse distorting, at least this way the pole takes some of the energy out of the gusts no matter how bad it looks.

My dish is quite sheltered, so hopefully it's still on its pole. Was quite windy this morning and I didn't even turn on the TV.... Will check tonight

I noticed out of the corner of my eye that one paper yesterday was claiming an 'Arctic Freeze' on the way.

Has anyone heard this from elsewhere ?

Not heard that, no. But then again most predictions tend to be wholly wrong.

But at least I stocked up on Kerosene and got my Boiler up to scratch in good time: Price of Heating Oil has gone up 10% in the last week alone.

Still wearing T-shirt for now.

(And trousers)

I noticed they mentioned before the weather after the BBC 10pm news last night (or was it the local news after the 10pm news, yeah I think it was BBC look north northeast and cumbria) that we are going to get some of that snow they`ve had accross the pond in the u s of a

Apparently it`s not going to be as bad as over in the states but we are going to get some according to the Beeb

Strangely though they didn`t mention it on the local or national BBC weather though, they only mentioned the rain today

(I`ve got my rigger boots to hand to keep my feet warm if the snow does come lol)

My comment about Forecasts has proved correct in an unexpected way - we are experiencing an almighty thunderstorm here in t'Repooblic right now.

Lappie and Netbook on battery only - not sure whether to go the whole hog and unplug the Wireless Router.

It's warm, though. Ecky-thump.

Its that time again chaps ..
According to BBC weather ...
100mph winds out to the west over the next 24 -48 hours ...
Most of these really strong winds will be out to sea ...but Ireland will certainly experience gales ...
Northern Scotland wont get away lightly either ..
And some structural damaging winds most likely in the North West UK ...
Don't worry anyone in the South or near the capital ..
Shouldn't be more than a strong breeze down there ..
Not enough to ruffle HRHs headscarf...

It may well seem calm at the moment where you are ..but the weather forcaster interviewed on the main news today (BBC) has emphasized that he hasn't issued a wind warning of this magnitude during his career ..

In truth I hope he's totally wrong about it ..........

Thanks VS (Michael Fish?) It's mainly the Biscay and Plymouth areas that affect me and thankfully it doesn't seem as severe there. I pity those living in the North and West though, especially the Hebrides. I've never seen 'hurricane force' mentioned in a forecast before.

The latest report suggests the cyclone may drop to 950 millibars by the close of business.

Time to strap everything down tight (as Max Mosley might have said - allegedly).
