Chris

Actually, they are not: download speeds are almost the same, upload speeds differ by about 30% and it is only the latency/ping numbers that differ wildly - but not sure quite how the latter relate to each other.

What server does the first test use? To compare the two testers (test the testers) they should both use the same server. Assuming they both use Ookla, that is.
You don't get a choice, first page:-

Almost certainly they won't, which could well explain the latency/ping discrepancies.

Tried it a second time and the ping and upload was still wildly out.

Only the download was similar, I will be sticking with ookla.

As an occasional alternative to Ookla, I use the BT Wholesale Tester

It's quite simple, but loads fast and the results are consistent with those from Ookla.

Bizarre in some respects, though, as my Broadband architecture, being FWA, has no relationship, either materially or otherwise, to the BT local network.

Well, I've been on my Unlimited 20Mbps Package for a few weeks now and it has settled down nicely

Most landline customers get quoted "up to " speeds that are rarely attained.

I have the reverse problem.

Nice problem to have!

Are you on a symmetrical service?

I ran the BT speed tester last week BTW Performance Test and it found a fault.

I was getting pings of 112ms and my speed had dropped to <20mb download and 5mb upload, I am on an 80/20 package with a line profile of 76mb.

This happened twice last week with the crazy ping times, so I ran the test again and it found another fault so I hit the run further diagnostics button put in the land line number and submitted the fault to openreach.

I walk past my green box quite a bit, so I was able to see open reach playing with the box.

Now hopefully they have fixed it my ping has now dropped to 11ms

If you run the tester, only submit the faults, I haven't had to speak to anyone to get this sorted.

Interleaving is actually supposed to make it all better, not worse, since it's essentially error correction.

The t**ts from BT OR were working on next house's line and managed to completely kill mine - no dial tone, nada.

After moaning at them on the side of the road, they reconnected it (apparently, it was a 'loose' wire) and I am back online. Only my sync speed dropped from 49000 to 40000..... looks like I've been put on a lower band because of all the reconnects.

Gah!
