Funny you brought this back to life, but I am at present trying to get Think Broadband to update their info for my Postcode as they seemingly think were all on half an Mbps BT still, whereas most of us use 20/20 FWA.

I don't have the 20/20 package as I don't need it, but instead pay for 10/5.

How did you find out about the 5ghz wan option?

As I am exchange only I can't have fibre.

Then your post popped up, and reminded me about 5ghz.

Largely word of mouth, although the local provider, Clannet, do work in collaboration with North Yorkshire County Council to do their bit.

We are a small village and the local busybody championed a node at his house.

Seemed silly not to piggyback.

There are a great many FWA and WIMAX offerings around the country now, so just Google (Other Search Engines are available) it.

Don't worry: Reception at Fish and Chip emporia is even more mushy.

"I'll have some of that Guacamole too, please"

Someone beat me to the fish & chip shop, so no mushy peas allowed in this house.
Pea fritter is a different story!

¿Has your area Brian got fibra installations yet or not?

We had an initial problem here as the original contracted supplier dropped out.....as you may guess, not worth legally a follow-up!

Luckily we as a community managed to secure an order for over 100 installs so the newly contracted work went ahead and must say that a totally professional job has been done, well pleased and especially as my security cameras now connect almost instantly....vital when I am out and need to check on the lady's safety.

Best wishes to you and family. respect-048.gif

Always thought using a vpn slowed the connection by a lot, but just tested with and without the free opera vpn, and there is very little diference.

Did a Speedtest on Think Broadband's site the other day, just as a change from the usual Oookla and was directed to a page supposedly reflecting average Speeds and Delivery Methods at my Postcode.

Their info was entirely wrong, particularly in that it claimed there was no FWA here, or indeed anything else but BT Wholesale Copper.

As the village only has one remaining Copper luddite, I used their Corrections link to give them some pointers and, to my surprise, got an intelligent and helpful reply saying they would correlate the coverage maps from my provider and update their Site for all affected Postcodes.

We had an interesting development here. The mast which appeared next to the cemetery (no, not an apparition) is for broadband via aerial. It's intent is to cover those 70 households who are not yet able to access the fibre network with which the village was supplied earlier this year. Those who would benefit from the microwave linked broadband were invited to a promotional meeting last week. It's intent was to explain how the system worked and the offers that were available. We didn't go, as looking at the speeds offered (up to 10Mb but as low as 3Mb) and the hassle of changing providers we decided to stick with what we had. The system is MiMo by the way and would only be about €7 a month cheaper than my present service from Orange.

However, this week new cables have been run from one of the new cabinets in the village to a pole carrying our overhead service. The broadband went off yesterday, though sadly it's speed hasn't increased. I'm hopeful that the thought of losing a few subscribers has woken Orange up and they are pushing ahead with providing FTTC and then on copper to us. I can only dream...
