Just got off the phone from British Telecom after cancelling my Broadband, Telephone and BT Sports.

After trying to cancel everything for the last two days, being passed on from one gormless idiot onto another i have now been told i have to pay a £30 disconnection charge because i have gone to Virgin to get away from their sh*te speeds and abysmal customer service which is usually in the form of somebody from the other side of the world who can just about grasp the English language. Its the final insult for me and makes me wonder why they haven't figured out why when they lose a customer they don't ever come back.

This is one thing that is hidden right at the bottom in the depths of the contract at the very bottom in the smallest possible font they could find. Just a word of warning to anybody that is considering going to this useless so called Telecoms company. DONT!!!

I will be taking up this abysmal service with their complains department although i'm not banking on getting anything back from them what so ever other than more insults.

Its annoying that you can't even take your frustrations out on a phone box as there aren't any :-lmao At least i can remove all the BT wiring from within the borders of my property :D

I've dealt with a lot of ISPs and phone companies and without a doubt BT have been the worst hands down. If i do end up paying it, their getting at a £1 a week.

If you where out of contract then surely just giving them the obligatory 30 days notice should be enough to avoid any cancellation fee's

It's why I will never go with any large telecommunications company for my err....communication needs. This includes Vermin. Small companies all the way.

Yeah that didn't work out so well for me, I was with BE, then it was sold to O2 and now it's part of Sky... although to be fair I still have a reliable service, hope it lasts...

As for BT, I get annoying junk mail and phone calls every month telling me how great their broadband is and why I should join immediatly. I've tried to get off their lists but so far failed.

Are you not on TPS? If you are, you should be able to make a complaint.

I am with Vivaciti and they also provide me with the phone line. It's still a BT line but I never have to deal with should something go wrong.

Yeah I'm on TPS but I'm also a BT customer for the phone line (BE didn't originally do phones) so I guess they can get around it. What's more infuriating it they are now offering me fibre even though I'm on the only cabinet in the village that isn't enabled...

I have been with Virgin Media for the last 7 years :) previously I was with BT & Sky

I would not go back to BT in it's present set up as their extensive promotions sales adverts are not backed up with qualified staff to sort the every day problems,

VM at least have a decent customer back up system in my region that is missing from most BT area's.

The £30 disconnection charge mentioned is a fee charged by Openreach to stop & disconnect any ADSL or FTTC connection on their landline network. It's not just BT's retail end that passes it on, any ISP using Openreach's network throughout (I.e. not a LLU operator) is subject to this fee.

I had several issues trying to get a BT line and broadband in. Order placed in wrong name, then wrong address.

I am paying £11.40 for line rental and £30.90 for ADSL (business level - covered by work). When I move within the next couple of months, I might go for another provider but it certainly won't be BT!

I am glad. When I lived in Tunbridge Wells, Internet was broken at least once every month with outages sometimes lasting days. When phoning up, I could be diverted to India or UK... and depending on wind direction, I would be told different things. More often than not that there's a "fault in your area"... When working from home, having reliable Internet is rather critical, so I cannot trust these big companies since they don't have a clue.

Just get a deadlock letter from them and take it to the regulator. Make sure you add the wasted time of chit chat you had with aforementioned 'gormless idiots' and multiply it by your normal hourly charge.

Holy Moley £30 Disconnection Fee explained unless you request MAC code and go to another supplier

Personally been with BT for just short of 4 years with a Fibre connection and in all that time i have notices only 2 hours downtime which is amazing, I think where ever you end up going people will have problems with all services none of them are perfect

After having calmed down i realise i will probably have to pay the £30 charge, although it will be at my terms at £1 a week and as for disconnection, thats going to be a permenant one, i'll make sure of that.

If BT want to supply my property again for the next occupier its not going to be a 5 minute job with the cable just being enabled at the exchange. The engineer will definately have to visit the property that much i do know :-lmao

I have to go down the complaint procedure with BT first before going down the deadlock route but thanks for the advice.

Hmm think I'll reconsider going to BT for phone and Internet.

I was only going to do it to get the BT sport channels cheaper.

Had a bit of hassle with BT many years ago and don't think I can go through that again.

Its the second time i had been with them at this property, the first time was OK, it never prepared me for how bad it was the second time around. The customer service is attrocious, the service they provide you with isn't much better.

Most people don't know this, but if there is a fault with your line which happens to be within your properties boundary, straight away you get hit with a £170 engineers charge. This also includes damaged cables from a pole. If the break is within the measurments of your boundary, you get the bill, regardless of the fact its 30ft in the air, The same goes for cable damage within the ducts.

Free installation is only free if the cables and socket at your property are in good working order, if they aren't its a £170 charge to do the install.

I don't really rate Virgin Media either if i'm totally honest, although its the better of the two evils. Free repairs, no stupid disconnection charges and most importantly, Customer service agents that can actually speak English.

I'm just wondering if i can bill BT for the permenent disconnection that I'm going to give them :D

If it can be proven that the damage was caused by anything within your property (trees/gardeners or a satellite enthusiast clearing the arc with a chainsaw) then this is probably correct, however I'm sure their terms suggest anything after the primary socket is about the only failure truly outside their control.

I could be wrong though

Regardless of how the damage or fault occurs, if its inside your properties boundaries you are responsible for the repair costs, end of story :(

When i had a fault which turned out to be in the pit down the road they constantly rammed it down my throat that if the issue was within the boundary of my property that i would have to pay the £170 charge. When i asked them what they defined my boundary as they stated it was where my property started not the primary socket as i once thought.

BT and Openreach have you by the short and curlies which ever way you look at it. If they can screw you out of some money then unfortunately they will.

went with BT 18months ago from a recommendation off a member on here and there BB is fantastic here, was with vermin before that and it was shocking with awful latency and constant breaks in service. the main gripe i have with BT is they are constantly threatening me with late payment/disconnection fee,s because i choose to pay on the last possible day although im always 1 month in advance. BT are expensive compared to others but with the free BT sports it evens itself out
