hi all
wow I just spent about an hour trying to register lol
I kept getting an error like "Please enter a value that matches the required format."
but it would not tell me where the error was or what field I needed to change
so I think I tried about 25 times with different usernames, emails, passwords
and at some point bang it just worked.
hence the strange username... I forgot to change it so something more... human because I was not expecting it to work
but I figured out why it did not let me register
it was because of the "My satellite setup" field
if I try to write something like "nothing yet" it would give me the error and it would not let me register
but if I write "nothing_yet" it would accept it.
strange huh
hopefully you guys can find that something is wrong and its not just me lol
oh and also can someone change my username to something like Luke please?
thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum, sorry you had problems.

Unfortunately we had to limit the input option in the My Satellite Setup section to alphanumeric and underscore, as we were being besieged with spammers using those fields to post p o r n links, will see if we can fine tune it a little better.

Let me know what username you want and I'll check if it's available.

It has been buggy for years and goodness knows how many people have had these problems. I had to fiddle around with the fields and I even had use someone elses e-mail because it spat out mine!

you will probably have more members if not for these issues. some people would just give up after a couple of tries

Extremely unlikely as we are on a completely different web platform now than when you registered in 2009 and as Rolf has mentioned the action taken is not a bug it is to stop spammers registering and posting links but it is being looked at to see if a friendlier solution can be found.

I doubt it Luke the solution was a temporary one introduced to reduce the daily back office work and had only been in operation 5 days, we currently have 229,000 registered members which speaks for itself, but thanks for your concern

All the forum can be viewed without logging in, most forums have it set so you need to login to view, we have 6 pages of guest as we speak just browsing the forum, if peeps don't want to post it gives them no incentive to join/login.

I do appreciate all the effort behind the scenes.

It is always good the receive feedback whether positive or negative and I am glad it appears to run nicely, that is nice to know, but you would be amazed at what does go on behind the scenes, I should have kept notes I could have written a best seller :-rofl2

It does appear that personnal details form has gone a bit screwey also. Just tried to change my satellite steup list and it keeps saying something about entering correct value when all i have tried to do is remove one of my receivers. Very wierd.

Just put the satellite system field back to unrestricted until I can find a way to include standard punctuation, but exclude/bounce URLs.

Am running a forum, using registration questions (a dozen questions, of which 3 randomly showing in the reg form), this has kept 100% of bots away, stopped 100.000's of reg attempts trough the years. A few (maybe 3 pr year) 'human bots' do register, but these are quickly spotted by mods and shot dead before doing any harm.

xenforo got it ("Creating Custom Questions and Answers" "Active questions will be presented in a random order") CAPTCHA | XenForo Should kill botnet regs for good, if properly implemented.
