Nice, does it need time to settle down or will you get this speed connection all the time?

It'll get throttled back once the paperwork is complete - I'm not paying top whack.

Yeah I'm only on this fancy fibre thing from Sky as I got a half price offer other wise I wouldn't have bothered.

you'll be on Netflix or one of the likes now you have your faster connection.

image.jpg I gave up with my extremely slow land line broadband when I was lucky enough to get 4G in my area

Aye, well the reason for Community Broadband is there is not only very, very, very slow Landline ADSL, but also no worthwhile 3G coverage, let alone 4G.

The views around here are nice, though but!

I know what you mean , I have family in your neck of the woods and phone coverage is patchy at best ! Beautiful country side though & I'm glad you've managed to get a decent setup at last

Great news the village ( 11 houses spread over 3km. ) is getting fiber BB this year to replace adsl on copper wires.

Bad news is each household has to cover the excess cost beyond the local council grant for installation, as this fiber connection has to be buried in the ground ( mostly granite rock here ) and my property is end of line, think I must remain on adsl for the time being. Pity they will not allow fiber connection from telegraph pole to pole.

No chance of a community wireless connection:eek:

Regards

Well after a few weeks of use, I can report that the system is a great success. So much so, that a further three household are going to to subscribe in the near future, which will leave a single solitary user (my neighbour) on copper. Just think of that unhindered Contention!

Careful you don't promote it too much or it'll all fall down during the busy times... ;)

Here's a synopsis of performance over the past month or so

Not bad, considering it's a multi-hop wireless link to (dare I say it) Virgin Fibre somewhere or other.

And I pay for a 10Mbps service, so for once it's a minimum, not a vain hope!

Upload averages out at 8Mbps.

My Virgin upload and a lot of other people's is 3Mbps. :D
8Mbps seems really good.

Odd I get more than twice that, considering we're only indirectly linked into Virgin?

It's not as if I even need it, except perhaps for sending uncompressed pics by EMail!

If you look at top right of the graph, my Best Effort for upload exceeds 12Mbps.

12Mbps may make sense.

Download speeds 50Mb, 100Mb and 152Mb
Upload speeds 3Mb, 6Mb and 12Mb

I'm on the 50Mb so get 3Mb upload.

I see your point: Our Community System probably taps in to the Fibre Network at 152 Down/12 Up, then.

As most users will be Downloading rather more frequently than Uploading, Download Speed will be relatively heavily Contended but Uploads will be better able to operate near max.

Good info, thanks.
