The founder of Radio Caroline - the first pirate radio station off the UK - Ronan O'Rahilly has died aged 79.

Radio Caroline started broadcasting in 1964, challenging the BBC by playing continuous pop music; a precursor of the commercial radio we have today.

RIP

Oh deary me. Radio Caroline North was an almost permanent fixture on my radio when I was in my teens. I still listen to the station now, albeit as an internet radio station.

RIP Ronan, you changed British radio forever.

R.I.P Ronan. I haven't listened to the station for ages - do they still use Jimmy McGriff's 'Round Midnight' as the close-down record? I occasionally play mine for the nostalgia.

R.I.P. Ronan, you changed the stiff necked BBC, something we would all like to do, you kickstarted the careers of presenters Tony Blackburn, Roger Gale, Mike Allen, Ray Teret, Roger Day, Simon Dee, Tony Prince, Spangles Muldoon, Keith Skues, Johnnie Walker, Robbie Dale, Dave Lee Travis, Tommy Vance, Tom Edwards, Paul Noble, Bob Stewart and Andy Archer became well known. Some DJs from the USA and Commonwealth countries, such as Graham Webb, Emperor Rosko, Steve Young, Keith Hampshire, Colin Nicol and Norman St John, were also heard. DJ Jack Spector, of the WMCA "Good Guys" in New York, regularly recorded for Radio Caroline. Syndicated shows from the US and recorded religious programmes were also broadcast. BBC Radio 2 newsreader Colin Berry and Classic FM's Nick Bailey started their careers reading the news on Radio Caroline South. He also started a trend for that class of broadcasting off shore to beat the regulations, copied by many people in many different countries, the most famous I remember from the seventies was Abie Nathan on The Voice of Peace.

I don't think they close down these days; They've expanded somewhat in recent years. They now run 2 services - Radio Caroline and Radio Caroline Flashback and once a month tie up with an old collaborator; Manx radio. They are on DAB in a number of cities and also have a MW frequency, 648khz which is aimed at SE corner, but can sometimes be received further afield.

Not enough, Vanessa Feltz is still polluting the airwaves.
