I have a satellite dish - I want to decode the signal and broadcast it
My Location

Hi people,

I basically have a random satellite dish which is providing me with some great channels.
My sister lives in a location where she can't have a dish installed, so I want to share my signal with her.
How can I provide live streaming to her?

I just need some hints.
Do I need some hardware to decode the signal and provide the live stream?
I am a developer myself so I am ready to invest some money and time in this.

The raw question:
How to provide live streaming from my home satellite dish across the internet

Do Sat>IP servers transmit the full transponder (~45mbps) or just selected PIDs (~up to 8mbps on SD and ~20mbps on HD)? If the latter, then things like fibre Internet can probably cope with these. Obviously need the same download speed at the receiving end.

Also, is it possible to convert incoming Sat>IP signal at the receiving end to be used by any DVB-S/S2 receiver?

It doesn't transfer the transponder over ip, it is effectively a satellite receiver with four tuners, so it acts like a slingbox, but for four people.

Actually may have to scrub that suggestion, as it appears there is no ability to limit the streaming output to allow passage over the internet, so for LAN use only.

hmm.. I was thinking about using apples live streaming API (HLS) - the question is just to find out what kind of hardware component that connects to my sattellite dish and can deal with the decoding stuff.

As the OP is a developer he may be able to take this as a starting point? Certainly a project we'd like to hear about!

It might be possible via a VPN connection to simulate a LAN tunnel over the Internet but I still think it would require some serious Internet connections (which might well be possible in Denmark). Having never seen or used a SatIP system I can't really know for sure.

Questions, how far away does your sister live from you?

As there are ways to do this via fibre optic, but you have to be able to string the fibre on poles or under ground.

As far as streaming the signal over the internet it may be possible but only one channel at a time and possibly only SD channels, this due to bandwidth limitations with most ISP's.

Most satellite IF signals coming down from the LNB are from 900 MHz to 1450 MHz wide, in 32 MHz steps, you would need some serious equipment to send that over the internet, (If your ISP would let you) so the only way to send the entire IF block is via fibre optic cable.

They make fibre optic modulators and demod's for the satellite IF signal for one satellite only, these are not cheap, and the fibre optic cable is not that cheap ether.

Here is some info on this,

Try DVBViewer's recording service. You can stream into the web and if your upload speed is too low you can stream with lower quality using on-the-fly transcoding.

He is still going to run into some serious bandwidth limitations from his ISP, most have from 4 GB to 10 GB a month, more if you want to pay for it.

The only way around the ISP bandwidth limitations would be a dedicated T4 line (274 Mbps) for SD channels, or an OC 24 fiber line (1.24 Gbps) or an OC 48 (2.488 Gbps) for HD channels, but those will require some deep pockets. (OC 12 to OC 48 is an internet back bone)

Then there are hidden dishes.

Or putting one inside the house/apartment looking through a South facing window, but you have to use a NON IR and UV reflecting glass, or plexy glass, as some of the newer double pane windows will cut down of the signals from the satellite, this due to the anti IR and UV coatings.

Actually, in Europe (certainly the UK and France) many ISPs have unlimited downloads for not a huge amount of money.

Are data caps still common in the USA?

Yah, a lot of them have a 10 GB per month cap.

For a hi-tech country we are low-tech in the ISP department They should rip it all out and run fibre to all places, not just the large cities.

My ISP is done via a wireless microwave link; The best I can do is 6 Mbps, but I get unlimited bandwidth. Some are not so lucky.
