Bright eyes here looked at the Med8er at Currys. No that looks confusing, isn't there anything easier. yes the Currys man said, a new smart tv. No way I just want a simple means of streaming from my sat box to a tv. He did not know of anything except a Now TV box. I am changing my sat box when the new ones arrive, only if they are better than existing models. Just what is the best set up so she can use it. No internet, Youtube etc, just a means of streaming from my sat box to a tv.

No definite answer; just my thoughts FWTW......I think it will depend on what your sat box will talk to. A couple of years ago I'd have suggested a Hauppauge Media MVP but they are a bit outdated now. I used to use one to stream from my HTPC but have replaced it with a Raspberry Pi running KODI (formerly XBMC), which also does streaming from the net, YouTube etc. There's a vast choice now. Just search on streaming media player on, say, Ama___ but they keep cramming in extra features so I don't think you'll find anything that basic

Thanks. I thought as much, everything has loads of bits I do not need. Maybe a separate dish and receiver would be easier in the long run. I just don't fancy putting anothr dish up as I know my neighbours will moan.

Hey TJ, are we talking live streaming (of live TV channels), or a mediacenter of what's on the HDD or what?
And what degree of control do you need?

One possible solution is a n HDMI extender, coupled with an IR extender.
This let's your other half's TV display the output of the box, and the IR extender will let her control the box from afar.

This works for all boxes, as long as they have HDMI out and IR remote control (doing the most common NEC protocol, but's that probably too techincal).
User interface-wise, this means selecting an HDMI dedicated to the box, and then everything behaves as if the box was in the same room.

Second chouice is, if you just want to share the recorded content on the HDD of the STB, get an STB with a DLNA server built-in. There are several on the market. I am having plenty of fun with the Humax iCord Evolution.
It streams to my smart TV, and even transcodes and streams to my smartphone when connected over the same WiFi. Great for watching the latest news on the bog. (as iPlayer doesn't work here in DK).
This does not, however, do the freesat EPG, so planning your recordings is a bit more cumbersome...

Thirdly, If you are well-versed in PC-configuration and Linux, you can set up your own recording server, and share the content with many types of clients, including your smart TV. This can be MythTV base, or use somthing like TVHeadend - but they all have one point in common: They might install out-of-the-box, but to make them work the way YOU need 'em to work requires hand-on linux stuff, scripting, server configuration etc.

So - make up your mind of the "use case" for your redistribution of the SAT box, and you can choose what route to follow.

Thankyou. I never gave an HDMI extender much thought.
I have spent ages mulling over all the options and always come back with I will get lost with that. But then I get lost with most things technical these days. my defence is that its age related and also the surgeon took out part of my brain last year whilst I was in hospital. I think the HDMI extender is the easiest option and probably the easiest to use. Now to find the prices and reviews. Any recccomendations.

Do you need a separate dish? Maybe a quad or octo LNB plus run of cable would suffice?

Very difficult to run cables to the other TV. I could come off the existing set up but I really do not want to take up laminate flooring and its hell in "bright eyes room" with clutter of dress making, painting, crafts and books galore on history for her work. The easiest way is an HDMI wireless extender but just trying to find out if its better to go for cheap but good reviews or expensive Lindy with few reviews.

Ok, that's more problematic. You'll struggle to find wireless HDMI extenders, as the bandwidth required is beyond mortal WiFi performance.
Remember, HDMI is uncompressed video and audio.
I have been using dedicated dual Cat5 cable for my extenders.
Sounds like this isn't an option, then.

Then you need to look in to the second option of something that redistributes, and possibly even re-encodes.
The only box I've tried that does this is the Humax one. I'm sure there are others, but I have no experience.
The live tv stuff works through an App on a smartphone or tablet. Don't know if it will run on an Android TV - dinfinetly not on a proprietary Smart TV (which most of them are).
You may even want to consider a sling-box - this does exactly what you are looking for.
And these days they are not that expensive.
(If you were a Dish Networks customer in the US, you can buy their "Hopper" STB, this has a sling box built in!)
