In the UK these are known as stag beetles (or at least the larvae).

I have a wealth of experience of them from having many thriving around here so I hope they have not been taumatised too much.

Another resident, despite the size it was up and out of the glass in a split second.

I was about to trim the trees out front , then realised a pigeon built a nest in the neighbour's yard over a fortnight ago.

Looking like breakfast - plus a casserole - later in the week. :Y

Another image, unfortunately not big enough for the pot.

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
We have several of those in the garden very often - greedy buggers make a bee-line for the areas under the hanging birdfeeders (and even seen one of the pigeons perched on the line from which those feeders hang!)

Pretty bold as well - at least one of them is "happy" to wander very close to us when we sit in chairs outside the conservatory.

Stag beetles are a "protected" species in the UK - used to see one or two around here, but not for quite a long time :(

This sod got a large amount of the red stuff from me when my back was turned.

Not for long though.

What a strange growing season this year, my grapes do not normally begin to ripen until late August September, but already they are changing colour, yet my tomatoes that were started in March have only just begun fruiting

The restrictions over the past 18 months (perhaps the cutdown of pollution from the local airport) has been good for the beetles here.

I counted at least ten stag beetles flying about in the garden late afternoon, two landing on the decking momentarily, one unable to fly away after getting caught in the nearest spiders web and some jasmin plant debris.

And thus you rescued the stag beetle from the spiders?

PS: used to see a very few of those here, but not for at least a decade.
