I have had to return three times in the past six or so weeks to long standing clients that have had a SkyQ system installed, mainly to clean up after the upgrade 'engineers'.

In each instance I have been asked to dispose of the Sky HD box and other paraphenalia that comes with it since it is always left behind. However whilst I can usually find a home for the HD boxes, or at least the hard drives, the last three have absolutely no output from them, beyond the 'Sky+HD initialising, please wait' screen.
Even a forced upgrade doesn't work.

So am I just unlucky in getting a row of power supply problematic boxes - all different models btw - or is Sky now turning the old receivers off before the system is upgraded ?

Have you tried a full Factory Reset (as opposed to a forced Upgrade) as that might work?

PS: which models of HD Boxes were/are involved?

Hard reset. This is from my records - have tried this method, it does work. But there might also be a method using the menus that does the same.

1/ mains power off - NB must have a satellite signal (LNB Connected)
2/ press the back up button on top of box
3/ power up - keep back up button pressed for 30s
4/ release button when all front LEDs are lit up
5/ box will take 10 minutes to reset - then turn off
6/ don't turn on for another 5 minutes

That is what I tried, but I know it as a forced upgrade

From the internet - Factory reset

Once the initialising is up with the 'Sky+HD initialising, please wait' screen. the receivers go into standby and remain there, so I cannot access the menus

(I did try both ports with the incoming signal, just in case this might kickstart them.)

That's where the process explained in the link I gave above (and alluded to in Burnham Beech's post ) comes in as it is done via the menus (and what I did with the SKY HD Rx that I came across in the local LIDL carpark sometime ago - and which worked!) :D

If it's a PSU problem then I have a couple of PSU boards that came from then-working DRX890 HD boxes that I scrapped after I got the "LIDL" DRX895 that might be suitable - 1st one FOC on collection, but the 2nd "might be chargeable" ! :D

OTOH, I would be inclined to suspect the HDD's - or the connector/cable thereof - for not booting after the "initialising" message.

From the Sky site:

A System Reset is a last resort; it permanently deletes all recordings, downloads, reminders and series links.

Turn your box off at the mains, then press and hold the left and right arrow buttons on your box.
While still holding the buttons, switch your box on at the mains. Continue to press and hold for up to 60 seconds until the recording and playback circle on the front panel of your box lights up.
The box will take a few minutes to complete the System Reset and will then switch to standby.
Wait four minutes, then reconnect your TV and any other devices and switch them back on. Press the sky button on your remote to switch your box back on.

I've never had a PSU failure in a SKY box (or even a complete box failure), but maybe open up the box and disconnect all the inter-board/HDD connections and let it all stand for an hour or so to allow any standing voltages to dissipate - don't think there's a backup battery on a board, but remove it if there is. Then put it all back together and "try again"!

As I said
, I didn't think there was/is! - but, not having looked at all the boards recently, I couldn't be certain.

Thus, all are Wireless boxes with different HDD sizes and manufactured in different countries - looks like a design issue that is probably "common" to all three.

Have you tried some/all of the possible solutions that can be found by Googling "sky box stuck on initialising"?
