Seems there could be life left in the old dog yet. Just don't try it over the crappy aluminium wire that was later used I say.

A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

We appear to have connectorised block terminals installed for FTTP.
If copper can work at Gigabyte speeds then all that is required is another set of converters, no disruption to the existing lines out to each property.

But I doubt they will acknowledge the possibility now they have endorsed the newer 'technology', or payback for retrieval of the copper as they have been upgrading to full fibre for a decade at some eyewatering rates.

There are two words/phrases that stand out.

1. "...could..." in the headline.
2. "...can achieve data rates three times higher than currently seen at a fraction of the price, at least over short distances." How short are those distances? Increases in data speeds over the last couple of decades has been a trade off on the line length from xDSL to G.fast. Unless the technology can deliver gigabit+ speeds with at least the same reach of 0.5Mb/s ADSL, then at best it had a limited life.
