My Satellite Setup
Sky Q, GigaBlue UE 4K, Zone 1 28.2e, Zone 1 30W. Kathrein 1m 5W - 23E
My Location
Midlands
I'm just doing some school homework and have the following question.

Does Sky own the satellites at 28.2e or 28.5e or have any exclusive agreements? Or is it a case if anyone could launch a channel, pay the owners of the satellite to broadcast it, and then they would have to buy an epg slot off sky?

Many thanks

I believe this is correct, though the channel has to comply with Ofcom broadcasting regulations. Astra owns the satellites. Transponder space could also be rented from a third party rather than directly with Astra.

Sky don't own the Satellites. Many of the Channels on there are not exclusive to Sky.

All the Public Service Broadcast Channels like BBC, some of the ITVs, Channel 4 and Five are available to full EPG Platforms like Sky and Freesat and can also be received by Generic Free-to-Air receivers (albeit only with Now and Next EPG).

Sky have been extremely successful in allowing many people to think that they need Sky to receive these PSB (and many other) Channels. They don't.

A little less analogue, and a lot more crap.

Unless your content is destined for the UK audience I don't believe you would need to pay Sky for the epg.

The satellites are operated & owned by the Luxembourg based SES-Astra. Capacity is contracted to anyone who can pay. Indeed their great rival Eutelsat has sub contracted some transponder capacity and they market it as the virtual satellites Eutelsat 2E 2F & 2G.

Until it reached end of life a few years ago, Eutelsat did operate their own satellite at 28.5E but it wasnt replaced

Well if you have some deep pockets.

Depending on the coverage area of the satellite and what band it's on, ("C" "Ku" or "Ka" band) you could fork out anywhere from $500 per kilohertz of bandwidth (radio channel or talk only, no video) to $4000 to $100,000 per Megahertz (high end bandwidth for 4K HD programming) of bandwidth per month. Most up-link services require a yearly contract, some give discounts for 5 to 7 year contract committals.

All this can vary greatly if you need more channels, and would be location dependent.( spot beam, or global view coverage from the satellites location )

These are the average cost estimates based on a single channel at an average teleport hub. (were you send your programming for up-link to what ever satellite your looking at)
