Sorry - I have not created a dump.bin file since the 2018 version which you can find in Post #52

Sorry, I haven't used my meter for several years, and so any new file (if I had the time to create one, which I don't) would be exactly the same as the 2018 version.

I am using a MAC computer with Big Sur installed. The closest I can come to connecting my late model 6906 to the computer is with a USB to firewire cable, but I cannot find software to configure it. I have Windows 10 installed via Parallels too, so I have been trying to find the upgrade.exe file to no avail. I have no idea what firm ware is presently installed. I have had the device since about 2010. Any and all help will be appreciated.

I was helping a neighbour align his dish recently and remembered I'd bought a Satlink WS6906 a few years back which got very little use.Still in it's fancy packaging too. I connected it up to the mains and it powered up fine. I left it charging for a few hours and surprisingly it's holding charge. I've identified that it's the older model.

The problem now is the settings are way out of date on the unit. All the original accessories I got with the WS6906 are still in the box. They include a case, case strap, car charger, AV cable and user manual on a mini cd. What it didn't include was a mini disc with any software or drivers or a USB to serial cable. I imagine they were purposely left out as I imagine the retailer saw an avenue further down the line for an upgrade revenue stream.

Fast forward to today. I do not have a PC with a serial port and cannot locate one. The WS6906 for some strange reason has only a USB port for connection to a PC. Now the problem. To get the PC and the WS6906 talking to each I would need a USB to serial male cable connected to a female serial to USB cable, I'm not sure how suitable this configuration would be. I do have the loader software and the latest bin dump file I got from here. Thanks.

Could anyone who succeed upgrading their WS6906 via PC explain how they made the connection between their PC and WS6906. The installation manual does state that a serial connection needs to be made between both units and normally a satellite receiver would have a serial port connector to do this. After all that's exactly what the WS6906 is.

W.r.t connecting a 6906 to a PC without a "real" serial port, I used one of these UGreen USB->RS232 converter cables plugged into a PC USB port and then plugged that cable into the cable from the 6906 - I.e. PC USB->RS232 converter-> 6906 USB port (ridiculous isn't it!)

That worked and I was able to download the bin file from the 6906 and save it on the PC, and also reload that to the 6906 after locking it - can't remember much more about the process because it's been several years since I did that!

The cable you received with your WS6906 obviously had a built in chipset in the serial end of the cable otherwise it wouldn’t recognise the USB to serial connection. I assume that the serial end of that cable connector was female. You then purchased another usb to serial cable with another chipset and joined the male end of the serial connector to the female end of the included cable so you could complete an end to end usb connection between meter and PC. Mind boggling.

Had anyone tried connecting a usb flash key with the new bin dump file directly to the meter USB port, power it up to see if it would auto update. That sounds the most logical route to go when a device only has a USB port as a means of communication.

IIRC, the PC recognized the combined 2x cables & converters as a Comm port (with number) and then Win 10 worked that.

Never tried a USB flash key, and not sure if that would work because the PC had to issue commands to make the 6906 upload/download the files

I’ve a number of serial to USB adapters here, all with male 9 pin connectors. I’ll try getting a gender changer and see if that works.

I have to say, from a manufacturer’s view none of this makes sense. Serial ports on PCs were shelved years ago. A simple inclusion of a 9 pin port on the meter would have been a much simpler option or upgrade via USB key as I suggested. Not surprised it wasn’t a big seller

Thanks for your feedback. In the meantime while I’m waiting for a gender adapter I’ll try a USB flash key with the file and see what happens.

Now I know why I forgot all about the WS6906 and it wasn’t particularly cheap at the time either.

Okay.. I know this is an oldish thread and has a lot of good info about doing an upgrade to the WS-6906, but I am still confused. (I'm from Florida!)

I was playing around with my WS-6906 and set it to "Default", losing my TV Program. I did the same thing in the past, but I don't remember how I resolved it. I have no cable but probably did in the past. It must of got lost. I probably had an old computer back then with a RS232/DB9 serial port.

Anyway..
I have the loader software and the .bin file, but I am confused about the cables. I purchased a USB to DB9 (male) cable. It did not come with software, but when I plugged it in, Windows 11 recognized it as "USB to Serial Port (COM 6 ) " . Now my computer has a RS232/DB9 serial port. So exactly what else do I need to connect to the USB of 6906? Something to convert it back the other way and a null adapter??

Would a USB to USB null cable work?

Any help would be appreciated.

What are you trying to achieve. All you need to do is select the relevant satellite your dish is pointed at and select scan. Just grab the manual here. It will explain what you need to know SATLINK WS-6906 | Manualzz

Thanks for the reply.

"What are you trying to achieve."

To connect the 6906 to my PC to run the "install.exe"

To restore my 6906 to the way it was before I chose "default value" in the menu.

I no longer can, as the "manual" says, "view the actual channel on the screen of the meter"

Is my thinking wrong? Do you know the right way to get everything back to "factory" and not have (see picture) "no tv program" appear on the screen.

My original question and the reason for my post:

I'm asking what usb/db cable set up do I need for the 6906 to communicate with my PC.

I wrote:

BTW: just to make this quite clear (and probably isn't needed!) I haven't used my WS-6906 for at least 5 years and have completely forgotten how to use it! - so please don't ask me any questions on that meter!
TBH: I've just realised that I'm not even sure where it is or if it still works:rolleyes:

I wouldn’t waste the time and energy pursuing the workings of this meter. SD broadcasts only, It doesn’t like sunlight either. Impossible to see the screen. Unless you possess the original serial to USB cable it will be impossible to upload the firmware file. Believe me I tried it. I’m just curious to know what happens when you press the Menu button
