He must be on a light user package if he can get away with paying ~400 quid a year for satellite internet. I looked into it a couple of years ago and the charges were horrendous if you are a heavy user

I'm not entirely sure why the BBC consider this newsworthy.

Powys man gets broadband via satellite over Africa - BBC News
I'd be more impressed if the satellite were over Australia
Yes well he has the perfect profile for aunty Beeb and their selective media reporting, a liberal, multiculturalist, no borders, hippy puuurfect fodder
Can I double plus "like" this?

I've been collecting quite a few Gilat ODUs cheaply from people who have given up sat BB. Looking at the reviews it seems to be plagued with problems. I wonder how good it is. The BBC chap still needs a back up for rain fade.

Some of the remote farms round here have sat bb and from what I hear down the grapevine its plagued with issues. Better than nothing but not much.

I think it is newsworthy because it gives the awareness about internet via satellite.
If more people want to subscribe to the service, then the price might go down.
I don't blame him for paying what he is paying. Life is too short and if the internet makes him happy, then it is a good way to spend his time.
We are lucky to have broadband internet and pay peanuts for it by comparison.
Any idea which company provides him the service? I know that twoway has distributors in the UK
Tooway – Fast internet everywhere » Our subscription offers
Bentley Walker being one of them.

Here satellite broadband is the only option if you are too far from the exchange and you have no local WifiMax coverage. Our department used to subsidise the costs of the installation, but I think they've cut back on, or even stopped the offer. Satellite broadband is not overly reliable here, caused mainly by the poor after sales and repair service....but hey, it's France..

But that was my point - It's old hat and fairly commonplace in the UK.

And it's also typical of BBC Journos to be several years behind the game.

Sorry, I didn't realize that.
In Israel, internet via satellite is not commonplace at all, this is why I thought it is newsworthy.
I think the two way LNB (transmit and receive) will certainly needs a special license from the Ministry Of Communication, and that is something nobody wants to deal with. Gilat develops and produce the equipment, but as the saying goes:
The shoemaker goes barefoot. They probably don't sell the equipment locally.

Oh for sure, our broadband is currently running at the dizzy heights of 1Mb download. We are over 5km from the exchange so we can't really expect anything quicker until the fibre which is in the village is connected to our copper.
