Pay-TV giant, Sky launched Europe's first 3D channel in October of 2010. Since then, the channel has aired a wide range of 3D content. From music festivals and concerts to movie premiers, from ballet productions and episodes of Got to Dance to the ever popular sporting events, Sky 3D has gone from strength to strength.

As part of the company's recent promise to increase the amount of UK content by 2014, and to dedicate £600m into new programming, Sky announced its fourth collaboration with Sir David Attenborough: a three-part natural history series to be called Galapagos 3D.

Describing the story of the Galapagos islands, the series will be written and presented by Sir David. It was commissioned by Celia Taylor, Sky's head of Factual Features, and is set to be the first film produced by Colossus Productions, the company formed by Sky and Atlantic in early 2011.

Galapagos 3D follows Sir David's BAFTA winning Flying Monsters 3D, The Bachelor King 3D (to be screened this New Year's Eve), and Kingdom of Plants 3D (to be screened next year.)

Anthony Geffen, the co-founder of Colossus Productions, CEO of Atlantic Productions, and producer of Galapagos 3D, said in a statement: “We are very excited to be making our first 3D project at Colossus Productions—it is our most ambitious yet and will involve micro and macro filming on location and state-of-the-art 3D visual effects which will peel away the Earth's surface and shed light on the hidden forces that have built and shaped the islands.

“David and I really wanted to think of a place where we could take everything we have learnt with Flying Monsters 3D, underwater filming with Bachelor King and the macro filming of Kew. In a way Galapagos is crying out for all of those techniques and that is what we are very excited about.”

Adding to the excitement was John Cassy, the director of Sky 3D, who said: “The Galapagos is one of Earth's greatest treasures, but it is unreachable for the vast majority of us. 3D will bring the islands to life for our customers in a way that has never been possible before. Sir David and Atlantic Productions are the natural partners to take on this ambitious project on - and ensure our natural history programming continues to break new ground.”

Finally, in a recent interview with Sir David himself, Televisual magazine quoted the award winning narrator: “Galapagos is one of the most wonderful places in the world. There are extraordinary creatures living there that live nowhere else – a whole slew of marvellous animals. But one of the things that make them even more extraordinary is that because the islands were not discovered by human beings until relatively recently, and they had remained isolated for so long, the animals still haven’t become frightened of human beings. You can walk among them carrying your own snap shot cameras or even carrying a 3D rig and they won’t go away. They continue behaving in just the way that they would do naturally. Galapagos is full of drama, full of charismatic creatures which you can film; it is a natural for 3D.”

Galapagos 3D is scheduled to air in late 2012.

Will shutter glasses be required, or has there been some evolution in the broadcasting of 3D ?
