Just noted this report from forum member logjam over on the DigitalSpy forum. he is located in "North West Devon"

Since the Ka band signals from 9E seem to be established now I thought I would give it a try. I used my 80cm dish and lined it up on 9E to receive the Ku band channels on my Fortec Passion. Then I swapped the lnb for the Ka version. (Inverto White Ka)......

......It took a few seconds to register on the built in signal meter during which I thought it had failed. Then it suddenly registered a 70% signal. After a scan

A bit surprised ...but not that much really ..
Since the footprint/beam is ovate rather than circular ...
Like I said in my dedicated ka thread ...I'm conviced the footprint extends sufficient to cover quite a bit of the UK ...and inland with a bigger dish ...if not for the jamming effects of the Scottish beam ..which effectively takes a bite out of the Saorsat footbrint ..
This second 'empty' beam would not extend to the south of the UK ..which _would_ allow Saorsat to be DXed
imo of course..

Hmmm ..
Interesting and possibly relevant ...and might explain a few things ..

Just dug out the Humax HDCI2000

One of the few receivers I own that can be set DVBS or DVBS2 during the scan process ..
Both the Openbox S9HD and the DrHD F15 performs this task automatically ..to interpret the stream
Tonight I tested the Openbox and the F15 again ..
Both showed a good signal strength ..and signal Quality ...
Both performed the scan ...and as usual found nothing in the stream.
I then tried the Humax ...and setup the parameters as per
Freq 10764
SR 25000
FEC 1/2
but since it was possible to set the other parmeters manually ..I set QPSK and DVB ...
I got a good-ish signal level ...and a Quality reading of 60-65 %
The tuner in the Humax isn't its best feature ..and a bit lower gain than I'm used to
BUT ...
I then set the same parameters ..only this time QPSK and DVBS2 which is what it should be ...according to lyngsat

>>>
20185 L

RTÉ NL
DVB-S2 25000-1/2
QPSK

>>>

Signal level low at 14 % ....with no signal quality reading at all ..
So ...it looks like the 'empty' beam is using exactly the same parameters except its DVB not S2 ...and since the other receivers are auto in this regard ...a false lock is achieved ...and a signal found that is either empty ...or cannot be interpreted ..
anyone want to comment ??
Its either deliberate ...or coincidental ...but then why run a transponder/carrier without any content ??

Maybe it's a TP from the Scottish spot in test mode, just guessing, but perhaps its just a coincidence or cosequence of the overlap.
I'm no expert on these things, but I'm pretty certain that RTE can't afford the expense of running a "jamming" tp, they can barely afford what they have.

You may well be right EC ...but I keep asking myself ..
If this _is_ a test phase for the scottish beam ....then why run it empty ?
...more like it could be a 'burn in' mode and data would then follow..
We shall see ..
But then 2 signals should one eventually appear (TV or Data) on the scottish beam ...would comfortably coexist in the same space using the same parameters ...and providing Saorsat boxes are not DVB backwards compatible ..would never receive interference from the scottish beam ...and vice versa if Scottish receivers (whatever use they are put to ...TV or Data)...would never get interference from Saorsat ...providing they are not S2 capable ..
Clever really..
Double the space/frequency useage ...without ever conflicting..
Hats off to 'em ...but I'm still cursing the fact that I can't get a squeak from RTE
;)

Don't think it really matters about backwards compatibility, as the overlap area will not produce a useable lock for saorsat.
I don't think the Scottish beam will be used for tv, unless the Scots have plans for independence time and blocking the bad old enemy from watching their telly progams (tongue firmly in cheek!)

...Further to my last post ...
Chances are that those in Ireland using Freesat boxes ...such as the Foxsat ...may well be ok for now ..as these boxes handle both S and S2 ...but once the Scottish beam starts carrying data ...it could well be that problems will arise ...particularly for those living to the East or North East of the Emerald Isle ...as the Freeview box may well try and lock to the Scottish beam ...and get interference issues ..
If the dedicated Saorsat boxes are S2 only ...this can't happen ..

VS

As an after thought ...
The chap on the Isle of Man ...who can't get a lock or anything from Saorsat ..which surprised me ..
I wonder if he was using an S/S2 box ?
Perhaps he should get hold of a dedicated Saorsat box (assuming S2 only )...and try again ...
He might have better kuck..

To make any sense of your readings Vipersan where exactly in the UK are you as you seem to be on the very limit of the footprint at a guess from the last few posts you may be in Scotland ?

Nowhere near m8 ..I'm in Manchester ...but get a very good signal from what we are assuming to be ..the Scottish Beam ..

This new information I discovered tonight just re-enforces my previous request that I need to use my biggest dish ...and my highest gain receiver the F15 ...and that a scan on an F15 made in Ireland ..ie a pre scanned database is my only hope of locking Saorsat ..
If the parameters are already present ...in theory the box wont false lock to the DVBS signal ..instead it will lock to the DVBS2 signal ...
..assuming I can access enough of it ..

Good luck!
If you succeed you will have done well. You won't find much to watch, mind you.
You should register with boards.ie and discuss with the experts on there, maybe.

Thanks for your reply Vipersan a truly remarkable achievement to get any signals at all from your location on this very tight beam.

It costs nothing to have the TWTA running with a blank carrier, the satellite is solar powered.

Interesting... I wonder if I would be able to receive it in Bristol on, say, a 1.2m Channel Master.... Hmmmmm!
