Youtuber mustie1 uses a plasma cutter in some of his recent car restorations - its quite impressive to see it cutting through rotten metal so easily.

Of course it depends what you will do with plasma-cutter and how often it will be used. For myself I can not feel the urgent need for such a device in the garage, however it would be "nice to have one". There are more universal things must be in the garage before the plasma-cut, such as: angle grinder, good press drill, TIG/MIG/MAG welder, lathe, air compressor (you will need it for plasma-cut anyway). Cutting any metal into pieces can be easily done by angle-grinder BTW, and you will need angle-grinder work after you do plasma-cut. IMHO.

Did I mention "good press drill" in my previous post? :)
Look what I've bought another day and started to restore it. It is old (maybe 40 years old or even more) 2A112 press drill. Weights 120kg. If restoration goes OK than this one will become my basic press-drill in the garage.

@RimaNTSS

I already have a number (!) of various sizes of angle grinders, a half-decent press drill, a suitable air-compressor, a simple vice-mounted sheet metal-bender (and a very heavy-duty vice - probably older than I am, very strong and firmly mounted on a stout bench!), a decent small-diameter metal tube cutter, a metal cut-off grinder, and so the only things missing would be the kit to cut and weld both thin and thick sheet and large bar/angle steel - thus the TIG/MIG welder and something like a plasma cutter (the latter because I don't find it easy to cut sheet metal or large metal bar/angle with what I already have).

PS: regarding the press drill - much as I do admire your renovation of that big old one, I doubt that I would ever need one of that size! :D

@jeallen01 , I think you are fit to go for plasma-cutter. But welder is more urgent thing, IMHO :)
I was making pipe-bender Myself and friend of mine already bended some pipe. Still have lots of work to do, but we need to finish our greenhouses ASAP. I have an idea to have my greenhouse heated (undirectly) and ventilated by solar-energy.

Thanks, but I think - especially as I will need suitably cut & shaped material with which to weld - the cutter needs to come before the welder (which is why I haven't already bought one)

You might be right. But perhaps it is also good idea to get plasma-cutting CNC machine. They, of course more expensive but their usage would be much wider.

Thanks but I can't think that I would ever need anything like a CNC machine! - all I want is something that will enable me to occasionally cut smallish sections of tube / angle / sheet steel with a reasonable degree of ease :D

I had a couple of parts fabricated where the process included the use of a plasma cutter. I am sure there are some pictures elsewhere on the forum but I will attach them below to save a hunt around.

The need was for two pieces of U section steel with inner U diameter sufficient to straddle the top edge of a polar mount frame so that inclined tracking could be added. I could not source any U section of correct inner diameter apart from in long lengths so I got the appropriate square box section in a 1 metre length and had one face cut away using a plasma cutter.

The plasma cutter did the job well, cutting straight through the 5mm wall of the steel box section. I did notice that it gave a very fine ridged finish but that soon came out with a sweep over from an angle grinder with an abrasive plate.

The other point was that the plasma cutter stopped once or twice and the head or whatever part is in the head needed a clean or some type of twiddling done to it. However, I am not sure if the one used for the job was that way or if it applies to all plasma cutters.

pics below.

@RimaNTSS , do you remember the saturday (long time ago) we tested your new Tig welding machine at the DEKO company ?
I disconnected the torch of our (Deko) small plasma cutter and connect it to your welder and see , that also was cutting fine .
So you only need such cutting torch .
Because the connectors were equal I tried your Tig torch on our plasma cutter to see it also could work as a tig welder , but no , that did't work .

Of course I remember that @Trust , but from that time I di not have that welder anymore, instead I've got more sophisticated one :). And, as far as I remember that was argon gas we used to try plasma-cut, perhaps using compressed air would give better results.

No , we went to Deko cause there we have argon gas to try your welder .
Cutting was done with compressed air .

Hi folks! Can somebody guess for what this tool can be used in the garage? I like it very much!

`Ha ha, it was crank spanner before I cut that small piece away :-rofl2 and added it to the picture just to trick you :D In fact that small piece is going to trash bin.
