A Gen 2 Sonos One, if I connect the ethernet cable to the hub, does the wireless part of the speaker turn off completely, or does it still run in the background ?

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
Issue 609 of Computer Active mag arrived today, and, on page 43, there's a Readers's tips entry called "Connect Sonos via Ethernet" by someone was having trouble connecting his Sonos system to his BT SmartHome 2 router".

He uses a Powerline adapter to connect a lot of other stuff to the router, and he fixed the Sonos problem by connecting the Sonos unit with the Ethernet port to a spare Ethernet port on one of the adapters. That allowed the other two Sonos units to connect to the router, and to work - he didn't say whether the ethernet connected Sonos unit still worked or not, but I would assume that it does since he didn't say anything to the contrary.

Thanks, but that suggests the wireless link is poor in the location (then fixed with a powerline) but no info as to whether the wireless secton gets
disabled once the app and broadband is functioning through the cabling.

I think I'll have to try one out with the analyser taking readings nearby, unless somebody can give a difinitive answer.

If the 2x wireless units worked then that could only have been by wireless linking with the Ethernet unit (and then via PLC to the router) - thus it appears that the wireless on the Ethernet-connected unit WAS working.

TBH, why provide an Ethernet port on one unit if using that port then disables the wireless - doesn't make any sense????

Understood and makes sense. perhaps I worded the question incorrectly

Do Sonos devices, old or older, in the vicinity of other speakers, registered and on similar cabling back to the broadband hub, have a facility (automatic or by manual configuration through the app) where the wireless circuitry can be powered down ?

I have a Sonos S1 Beam Soundbar, which has always used WiFi.

I plugged in a LAN cable to a remaining port on the port extender connected to the router, to see if there's any conflict on the network between LAN and WiFi.

Checking my BT Hub Manager, after a few seconds the Sonos device tab automatically switches from Wireless to the assigned Ethernet port.

Now, the only way to control the soundbar is through the Sonos app on my iPhone, via its WiFi connection.

Disabling the Sonos LAN connection reverts the Sonos to WiFi working.

I don't know what happens if you configure it for LAN and then decide to use WiFi - I think you'd have to keep the LAN plugged in while you set up the WiFi .

Thanks again. Just to clarify the soundbar no longer puts out a wifi signal once it has connected through the LAN cable, or is it just the way it can be operated via the app changes ?

Is there any way to work an iPhone except by the wifi circuitry ?

I suspect the Sonos unit with the Ethernet port is configured to work like a phone which, when used somewhere there's a WiFi connection then automatically connects to the internet via the latter instead of using the normal 4G/5G connection - Thus it automatically connects via the Ethernet port but ALSO acts as a WiFi Access Point for the other two Sonos units to allow them to connect to the internet.

Which means it doesn't turn off the wireless part, despite there being no other Sonos items in the vicinity.

I will stick an analyser in the room to check.

One or t'other. Not both. (I don't have any other Sonos stuff.)

See top right Devices - Two 2.4GHz working if WiFi enabled - iPhone and Sonos (I have iPhone on 5GHz too). Other stuff on 2.4GHz not in use at the time.

iPhone only if LAN enabled.

Last pic, Sonos with LAN connected, now ported.Network13.JPG

Thanks. I will be checking the rooms that the devices are installed in tomorrow.

I have seen a couple of sites that suggest the Sonos company has a dedicated wi-fi system that can be enabled that reduces the amount of traffic and potential frequency conflicts. Is that option available on the Sonos app you have ?

The app I have allows me to connect with SonosNet,, which simply gives me the choice of another of the standard WiFi channels, i.e 1, 6 or 11 in case, as you say, there's conflicts within the prevailing WiFi system.

Shades of when I had problems setting up a decent WiFi connection for my brother in his care home with the home's pathetic WiFi repeater setup. I never found an interference-free channel, so I asked the engineer in charge of the system to switch on the unused Ethernet terminal in my brother's room so I could connect an old BT router I bought with me and use the router's WiFi. Problem solved.

My Sonos app also gives the option of Sonos's Boost system, apparently to connect other Sonos speakers to the Wifi network but as I only have the Beam soundbar and nothing else, I don't need it.

Yes, and thanks.

SonosNet is apparently one to check closely.

Will take images and report back.
