Good afternoon,

I used to watch Free TVE International via HOTBIRD but unfortunately I can't as the box I have is an old TECHNOMATE 5400 but it seems that now I need a HD receiver box. Could someone let me know please which HD box would be suitable to watch TVE international as I would like to buy it asap. Many thanks in advance.

In addition to that, I've heard that there are two options what would allow me to have a wider variety of Spanish channels such as Antena 3, Telecinco etc...:

1) TDT box + 80cm dish Hispasat 30 west
2) IPTV via internet broadband

Many thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Any DVB-S2 compatible receiver will get you TVE from Hotbird. An Octagon SX88+ is the default recommendation at the moment.

As for 30 west have a read of this recent thread:

Thanks. Can the Octagon SX88+ be programmed for IPTV channels too?

Yes but whether it can access the channels you're looking for - I don't know.

We would like to have the main channels that we could view via TDT (Telecinco, Antena 3 etc...) but the reason why I don't want TDT is because we need a big dish and we don't want to put such a big dish in our garden. Do you know where/who in general can program IPTV boxes are the satellite people who we have approached in Weybridge are not familiar with this....

IPTV is not something I'm familiar with, also the previously linked thread suggests there isn't a one size fits all IPTV package for these channels:

You may be able to receive the satellite signals with a smaller Zone 2 Sky dish with a non-Sky LNB. When the weather improves I will give it a go. 80cm isn't that big and dishes can be painted to help them blend in. Having such a dish may be the price you have to pay to be able to watch these channels.

An 70-80cm dish should be plenty big enough for the Hispasat 30W channels in the south of England. I get all of them on an 80cm dish offset lnb - dish aimed at 22W for the Reuters news feed. I only look at the fta channels but all normal tps are locked with good signal.

West London, about 15 miles North of Weybridge: most of the main FTA channels on 30W are received quite strongly with a standard SKY Zone 2 dish and as-supplied Visualware quad LNB - you only need a bigger dish for weaker channels.

Quite easy to install - just need the dish to be pointed/elevated in the right direction and "fine tuned" - I'm somewhat sure that "someone here n the forum" could help you out with that.

FWIW the TDT transponders are a comfortable catch on a zone 2 Sky dish here in the north east, 60cm should be enough down south.

I can confirm that @ozumo - I pick them up easily on a (cheap) 80cm here in Gloucestershire, with the most important transponders (12548/12631/12671V) being even stronger now than previously. I've used a 60cm in Staffordshire before with the same result. I reckon a zone 2 Sky dish would work great, and has the bonus of not looking "out of place". The only thing I'd say would be to use a standard 40mm LNB/holder rather than the Sky ones to be able to set the skew right for 30°W!

Jediná vec, ktorú by som povedal, by bolo použitie štandardného 40mm LNB / držiaka namiesto Sky, aby bolo možné nastaviť skosenie správne na 30 ° W!

I have done so on this occasion, thus:

"At 30 ° W I use a nameless 85 cm dish in Slovakia and the reception of Spanish channels is satisfactory ... Interesting that the 1st and 2nd program HEVC H.265 are exceptionally resistant even in bad weather ... Readers: Maneto - Gallery of readers' techniques"

Those La 1 and La 2 HD versions in HEVC are on 11222H which I find not quite as strong as the high band ones. The only ones that drop out quickly in the rain are the Canary Islands TVE/Antena 3 (11653H) and TVE Galicia/Basque Country (11677H), although these two are stronger now than a few years ago when I couldn't usually lock them at all.

Plenty of margin on the three high band verticals which carry all of the main national channels (plus TVE Madrid and Catalonia regional opt-outs).

HEVC is the same thing as H265. Two different names for the same codec :) The TVE HEVC versions are high quality because HEVC/H265 is much more efficient than H264 at the same bitrate.

I think these two HEVC versions are higher quality as they are backup feeds for the TVE studios in the Canary Islands - they don't show the clock on programmes like Los Desayunos or La Hora de la 1 (a version with the time an hour earlier is then inserted into the Canary Islands broadcast versions), or the promotions bugs for upcoming programmes in the top corners (again, these are often different on the Canary Islands versions with local programmes and times).

My observations may be out of date, but I believe Spanish TDT satellite decoders for Hispasat are difficult to obtain,( unlike French!) but on 13 degrees you also have Canal 24 horas news channel, and Spanish radio channels. On Astra 19 degrees you have Canal Sur, Extremadura, TV Galicia HD in Galician.
