Interesting both the Yokozuna's are out again - does this mean they will be told they are expected to quit?

The precedent now is any wrestler forced out with covid will not face any demotion so Hakuho should be able to carry on. Kakuryu may be given one last chance but we won't know until the Yokozuna Deliberation Council meets after the basho ends. Perhaps they are concerned about the possibility of there being no Yokozuna at all. However nothing is set in stone.

I spotted this guy on the NHK preview show. Turns out he is His Excellence Demon Kakka. :D

I half recognised the outfit - it took me a while to twig its the lead singer from a Japanese rock group who covered one of my favourite songs many years ago! Its a small world.

He pops up every now and then on NHK World, he's definitely been on Sports Japan before (now called J Arena I think) to talk about sumo with the nice lady that presents it.

Have a look at these guys on Bantamba TV.
This is brutal, looks like some type of African version of Sumo in sand. It is no holds barred stuff.

Bantamba TV appears to be part of the 2STV Senegal company so that wrestling probably comes from the Senegal / Gambia sort of area.

The Haru Grand Sumo basho begins this Sunday, again at the Ryogoku Kokugikan venue in Tokyo due to ongoing covid issues. Traditionally the spring tournament is held in Osaka.

Coverage continues on NHK World Japan, all times GMT:

Grand Sumo Preview:
Friday 12th March 0430 repeated at 0830, 1630 & 2230.

Highlights:
Daily from Sunday 14th March 1630 with repeats at 2230, 0430 & 0830.

Grand Sumo will be live:
Sunday 14th March 0810
Sunday 21st March 0810
Sunday 28th March 0730

NHK World Japan HD is available FTA in English

January's tournament was won by Daieisho, his first victory. It is becoming a trend that rikishi win their first basho in January - it has now happened six times in a row. Here he is receiving the tropy from Miyazaki prefecture - the prize is a carcass of wagyu beef.

D96B3797-28E4-4D28-B694-A796A3702F15.jpeg

Unfortunately Daieisho was only promoted to Komosubi, this probably means he isn't yet being considered for promotion to Ozeki.

40A95A61-509E-49AE-8833-00E7DE4F5BF7.jpeg

Yokozuna Hakuho reaches his 100th tournament ranked in the top division. Kakuryu is out again, this time with a torn thigh muscle. He had taken part in public training sessions and says he wishes to enter the May tournament... whether he will be allowed to is another question. The Yokozuna Deliberation Council did not convene in January.

Ozeki Takakeisho is kadoban, meaning he needs a minimum of 8 wins or will be demoted. Sekiwake Terunofuji should be promoted to Ozeki with double-digit wins.

January's giant macaron was pink!

Grand Sumo returns on Sunday 9th May. The Natsu basho is being held at the usual Ryogoku Kokugikan arena in Tokyo. Due to the tightening of covid restrictions there will be no crowd for at least the first three days.

Coverage in English is on NHK World Japan, all times BST:

Grand Sumo Preview:
Friday 7th May 0530 repeated at 0930, 1730 & 0030.

Daily Highlights:
Daily from Sunday 9th May 1730 with repeats at 0030, 0530 & 0930.

Grand Sumo will be live:
Sunday 9th May 0910
Sunday 16th May 0910
Sunday 23rd May 0830

The March tournament was won by Terunofuji. The victory ensured his return to the second highest rank of Ozeki, which he last held in September 2017, injurys saw him fall all the way down to the second lowest Jonidan division.

63E47B3D-8D33-4B56-8903-E8F18E21C608.jpeg

Yokozuna Kakuryu has retired and will become a stable master. Hakuho has undergone endoscopic surgery on his right knee and will miss this tournament. He will need to prove his fitness in July or face recommendation to retire. Perhaps this further last chance is to ensure there is a Yokozuna able to participate in the Olympics opening ceremony.

Ura will return to the top division with 8 wins :Y

March's giant macaron was green :-ohmy

Yah I will be delighted to see Ura back :D
Now the NHK highlights show every bout there's a good chance we'll see him 'up from Juryo' on one of the days they need someone to even out the top division numbers

For the first time since March 2020, a Grand Sumo tournament will be held outside of Tokyo. The July basho will be held in it's usual location of Nagoya, known for its oppressive hot and humid conditions. Audience size is capped at 50%.

May's tournament was won by Terunofuji, after a play off with fellow Ozeki Takakeisho. Another victory for Terunofuji will guarantee promotion to Yokozuna. A victory for Takakeisho could also earn him promotion to the top rank.

C41BCE03-5503-4663-9477-CFB8AE156AB7.jpeg

The event will also be Yokozuna Hakuho's final chance at proving his fitness. Anything less than a convincing performance will see the most successful Yokozuna in history be made to retire.

Ozeki Asanoyama has been given a six tournament ban for breaking sumo's covid regulations and, perhaps even worse, lied to the Sumo Association about his hostess bar visits. It will likely be two years minimum before he can return to the top division.

Ryuden has also been given a three event ban for breaking covid rules, after visiting his mistress on several occasions.

In happier news popular rikishi Ura and his sakura mawashi return to the top division for the first time since September 2017.

Ura has also being doing his utmost to dispel the myths of a sumo wrestler's diet (translation by Kintamayama on sumoforum):

"I'm lacking in stamina so I'm not able to train. I'm eating a lot of double MacDonald cheeseburgers lately. I hear it's about 40 grams of protein. If that's true, it's cool. I can't find 40 grams of protein in any other food. In the morning, I eat a morning Mac. Then a sausage muffin that has 15 grams of protein. I buy about ten of them and snack on them during the day. It's not what an athlete usually eats, it's not something recommended, but I feel it's a real shortcut for me"

Well done to Terunofuji for his promotion to Yokozuna. Sundays final bout between Terunofuji & Hakuho was an epic battle :)

The pre bout stare down was something we haven't seen for a long time. Hakuho is still the boss but I don't think it will be long before Terunofuji dominates.

It's fair to say the Yokozuna Deliberation Council was less than impressed with some of Hakuho's antics. From Kintamayama:

Mr. Yamauchi: "During the first thirteen day you could feel that he was frantic and earnest at times, but on the last two days he lost it. It was mostly the lowest level of sumo, especially for a Yokozuna. I was there on the final day opposite the dohyo, and that pose and that yell and the face he made after he won.. What the *&$% was that? That is totally unacceptable. There is nothing I can add. All of the YDC members were critical of this. There were even worse views on this than mine.."

Hakuho at the olympics with judoka Shohei Ono:

Some of the big wigs at the sumo association are not happy about his attendance, though apparently he is part of the official Mongolian delegation.

One of the show jumping fences was sumo themed, including wrestler, drum tower and dohyo:
