Hi Guys
Current setup in brief
Plex MS running in Unraid server through many streaming devices (Shileds Apple TV's Fire Sticks and Smart TV's) no issues ever.
I was also running Sky Q which i have now booted out the house.
I am heavily invested in Plex and wanted a DVR to put through it with Freesat.

I bought a Telestar Digibit R1 which i was told was very good and worked well with Plex.

Now comes my lack of knowledge i was told the Sky Q LNB would not work with the R1.
So a mate of mine a Sky fitter removed the Sky Q LNB and put back a general Quad Sky LNB used for Sky HD normally.

When i connect my R1 to the network i can see it i gave it a static IP and i can view it right across the Network.
Plex does not find it whatever i do, VLCV sees it, but nothing plays or streams.
Need some help on how to trouble shoot it to get it working please

Right, so the Telestar is a Sat>IP device as far as I know. Can you get on the web interface of it via your web browser using its static IP address and port 8080? Have you managed to get it to tune into any channels?

When you try to stream stuff in VLC, what are the channels you're trying specifically? I'm just wondering if it comes with a 'default' list that wouldn't apply for a dish pointing at 28.2°E for Freesat (I'm thinking maybe German channels which are carried on a different satellite).

Even if you can get it to directly play nicely with Plex in the end, you may need to consider running it via TVHeadend to be able to get the 7 day EPG working.

HI Adam
Yes i can login via web it is seen across the Network i scanned on 28.2 and it grabbed 820 channels approx.
But VLC will not play them and Plex does not even see the R1???
In relation to Plex i have a Life Time Membership which uses Gracenote to populate EPG for free.
I just need to get it working :(

Ah, looking at your R1 log file I can see it is indeed trying to tune to German channels on 19.2°E (e.g. service ID 11110 on 11362H - which is ZDF HD) rather than the UK stuff on 28.2°E which is what your dish is pointing at. You'll need to sort this/set it up in the web interface of the Sat>IP receiver as your first port of call I think.

Ahh OK so it has managed to tune the channels?

What's confusing me is that in your log file, all the attempted channel tunes it shows seem to relate to channels that are on 19.2°E rather than 28.2°E. The last one in the file (SID 28007 on 11954H) is a channel called 3Sat. That wouldn't work in VLC because your dish isn't pointing at 19.2°E.

I don't know much about Sat>IP though unfortunately in terms of how you get it to try and 'see' the correct channels that you've managed to tune in.

Have you tried manually adding the IP address as a source in Plex?

This seems to suggest you can put its IP address manually if it's not automatically found.

Edit - where in your screenshot you have "Eutelsat 48E" selected in the transponder list, you'll probably need to change that to Astra 28.2E as well if such an entry exists, although the device seems to have tuned lots of channels as expected anyway so this may not be a problem.

HI Adam
I have done a reset since then let me grab the log again see HERE

Hmm that still seems to be looking for Astra 1 19.2°E channels though - 10301 on 11494H = DasErste HD. Do you actually get a list of UK channels shown in VLC?

I can see the URL path format as -

Code:
/?freq=11347&src=1&pol=v&msys=dvbs2&fec=auto&rolloff=auto&pilots=auto&sr=22000&mtype=auto&sid=11160&pmt=6600&pids=0,6600,6610,6620,6622

Can you see the first part of the addresses it's trying in VLC when trying to tune in this way? Just wondering if you take the first part of that address and then modify the snippet above to:

Code:
/?freq=10847&src=1&pol=v&msys=dvbs2&fec=auto&rolloff=auto&pilots=auto&sr=23000&mtype=auto&sid=6941&pmt=260&pids=0,5400,5401,5402

Does BBC One HD then play?

The first part of the address should be something like -

Code:
rtsp://IP_ADDRESS_OF_TELESTAR/

So you could just try it in VLC by clicking File > Open Network Stream -

Code:
rtsp://IP_ADDRESS_OF_TELESTAR/?freq=10847&src=1&pol=v&msys=dvbs2&fec=auto&rolloff=auto&pilots=auto&sr=23000&mtype=auto&sid=6941&pmt=260&pids=0,5400,5401,5402

Just to check it's working.

Hmm very strange! I just found this that talks about SAT>IP devices in VLC, although not your specific one -

Might be worth a shot in VLC going into Tools > Preferences > Toggle 'All' in bottom left > Playlist > Service Discovery > UPnP and then in the SAT > IP Channel List dropdown, selecting Astra 28.2°E.

Then save, quit and restart VLC and try playing one of your channels again via the Universal Plug n Play Playlist. I don't know why that would affect it as it seems like you're getting the correct channels through in the list, but from the log it looks like something is still trying to tune Astra 1 instead of Astra 2, so this could help rule out VLC.

Well that is weird as you can see i have always had 2 versions of the R1 in VLC
Let me walk you through it with images prior to doing above VLC looked like this

View 1
View 2

After doing "Might be worth a shot in VLC going into Tools > Preferences > Toggle 'All' in bottom left > Playlist > Service Discovery > UPnP and then in the SAT > IP Channel List dropdown, selecting Astra 28.2°E."
The bottom one now populates BUT works in VLC see View 3 and VIEW 4 Working

If i check the link it is working on it shows
rtsp://sat.ip/?src=2&freq=10847&pol=v&ro=0.35&msys=dvbs2&mtype=8psk&plts=on&sr=23000&fec=23&pids=0,17,18,258,5500,5502

So now we have got it working and the channels look right how do i get Plex to see it?

Also does not play in VLC on IOS if i enter above address in Open Network stream don’t work ?

Good news! At least we've established now that the device itself is working as it should. :D

Very strange that it requires that to not attempt to tune the wrong parameters in the background though.

For Plex, have you seen this? - Live TV & DVR (Set Up and Manage) | Plex Support

If it doesn't appear automatically - if you add the IP address manually by clicking "Don't see your HDHomerun device?...", does anything appear then?

Well, I had a look and I can't find anything to suggest that Plex (yet) supports SAT>IP natively unfortunately. The HDHomeRun devices are apparently similar in how they work, but I guess they've got some differences allowing them to have been integrated fully whereas other standard SAT>IP equipment like the Digibit R1 hasn't. :(

You've got a couple of alternatives for it. You can use a DVR plugin that supports IPTV m3u playlists, then use the 28.2°E playlist from here - Channel Lists - SATIP

to use the streams from the Digibit. You'll need to replace sat.ip in each of the entries in that file with the IP address of your R1. Some of the channels may be out of date (I think this is what VLC is using and probably why Sky News isn't working. BBC Four won't work until after 7pm!)

The other alternative is to use TVHeadend as middleware. It natively supports SAT>IP and has plugins available for Plex to then use as a DVR source.

Hi Adam
First part i know several users who use R1 fully with Plex no issue. So i know it works when setup correctly (i know your going to say go and ask them how )

I have a Plex Pass and if i can get it in then it used Gracenote with the EPG.
But i know i can add TVHeadend to Unraid server but i don’t fully understand what it does and how to configure it.
I was hoping for a plug and play via Plex unless i can get some help with setting up TVHeadend:)

How can i on bulk edit the sat.ip list

If you just open the file in notepad and do a find/replace (Ctrl+H I think) to replace all instances of sat.ip with the IP address itself, that should do it. Then save and use that modified M3U file.

To be fair, the newest stuff I’ve found is a couple of years old so it may have changed now, but I’m at a loss as to how it would work otherwise if it’s not showing up in Plex DVR. It would definitely be interesting to hear from someone who’s done it as to how it’s set up! :D

I have Plex myself but I don’t have the pass, I only use it to watch files (mainly ripped DVDs/blu rays). I did try the TVHeadend integration a few years ago but I get the impression it works a lot better now.

Hi Adam
Do you have much expertise on TVHeadEnd?
Or are you Adam Sutton from the channel :)
TV Headend is fairly easy to install and configure these days. Everything is carried out by the configuration wizard. Once you expose the transport stream to the TVH server you’re good to go.

Probably the best route to go is to create an m3u playlist from the source, enter the url into the IPTV section and allow TVH to scan the m3u, find the services and map those services to channel names and numbers.

I have all my DVBS, DVBT and IPTV sources all configured in a TVH server and use the KODI TVH client to view them. The channel switch between all three sources is seemless.
