I offer you a little throwback to the past with photos of the evolution of BUD (Big Ugly Dish) sold in the United States by a very well-known chain store...

1986 The biginning.

I recall setting up a Gorizont C band dish of 90cm in 1984 to watch the Russians in SECAM and I'm sure Eutelsat 1 (F1) was available a few months earlier, though the Ku band LNBs were prohibitively expensive.

This thread from a couple of years ago mentions other satellite positions available at the time using Intelsat V satellites.

Steerable dishes were incredibly expensive.

I remember the first satellite antennas for "everyone", prices started at 6000 Francs, updated it is almost 2000 euros today...
I remember the first time I used a motorized antenna of 1m80 in the villa of a friend of my father in 1988. It was very rare in France.

Found an antenna at this price in Radiochak catalogue for the first time in 1986 don't show the real biginning of satellite reception in US but the start of mase distribution of this new way to catch TV.

The first French satellites really appeared in 1985 with Telecom 1A but for the masse distribution everything start in 1988 with Telecom 1C and TDF1....
