The BBC have bowed to popular pressure and, from February 2014, will give the venerable programme a monthly half-hour slot on BBC4 (Possibly the best Channel ever) with repeats on BBC2.

No news on the Presenter(s) yet.

Who says Auntie doesn't listen?

Well this is great news, lets hope they pick a decent presenter.

Well this is great news, lets hope they pick a decent presenter.

The earlier attempts are probably the reason it was destined for the scrap-heap. Whilst they are unlikely to find another youthful Patrick Moore (unless the Hadron Collider suddenly starts working as it should) they could do worse than to keep Jon Culshaw on a monthly retaier.

They should also reduce the number of viewings of nights out in fields, or maybe move them to the online section. There are plenty of newsworthy snippets each month to keep a 30 minute show alive, but the programme has ever really capitalised on these since the end of the shuttle launches, The producers should take note of the era of the moon landings for inspiration.

I just dont want the program to get dumbed down, loads of programmes these days are dumbed down . Sometimes i've predicted the script of what the presenter will say next or his next subject he will introduce. Keep it interesting and technical too. Hopefully this will rule Brucie out!!!!

Jon Culshaw is not a bad suggestion. He could play the inquisitive interested party without any problem. He would have to make sure there were no impressions though - not that thay're bad, just that as a presenter they wouldn't be appropriate.

If it goes to an idiot like Kate (not) Humble it will be doomed.

I can't believe they would want to scrap it anyway, thats the worst kind of dumbing down.

I'd be happy with Culshaw or Brian May co hosting with a professor from some university, that would keep me happy.(and thats not easy)

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

How about Alex James, he seems to have an interest in space, after all, who else could get away with making a song basically naming things up in the final frontier? :D

Got to be far better than Prof Cox who seems to send most people to sleep... :-sleep

And we have a winner.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-25109143

Dr Aderin-Pocock said she believed engaging with youngsters is key to increasing participation in science and engineering

Whilst the comment is to be congratulated, including it in the first link on her new position may suggest 'dumbing down' is a natural progression of the programme.

She could always ask for a version for children, Newsround style, and put on at an appropriate hour.

Tonight is the 800th show,

There is of course lots to talk about , not least the clearer skies out there (until the weather closed in a couple of hours ago), but is the enthusiasm of the public to nip out after dark with some binoculars as great as the gardening prowess of Brian May ?

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
I watched that late last night and found it quite interesting - especially the way in the ATLAS ("Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System") telescopes are being controlled and monitored remotely during the lockdown.

OTOH, I was very disappointed to note that, whilst Dr Heather Couper was one of the presenters, there was no mention that she had actually died of a stroke (at the age of 70 IIRC) in February , and of her contributions to astronomy. Therefore either the programme was completely recorded before she died, and/or-else someone was guilty of a major "omission" during the subsequent editing.
