That's even more irritating than the affection of ending sentences in a manner that makes statements sound like questions.

Upspeak is extremely irritating, the current Heath Secretary is an expert at it.

Sports commentators who insist on pronouncing foreign competitors and place names in an extremely strong accent is another one that annoys me. Rob Hatch & Johnathan Harris-Bass on Eurosport's cycling coverage are the worst offenders.

My latet bugbear are firms who I do business with sending EMails addressed with a degree of informality ("Hi" followed by "First Name") that breaches the bounds of courtesy.
It's the new normal. Going forward of course.

That's two phrases on my current hate list.

Yep, Rising terminators and starting everything with So are really irritating. Not too bothered about the informal address in emails etc by large companies, it's becoming standard and I ignore most of them anyway.

It is amazing how language is being used as a weapon these days, one short read of a BBC report gives you an idea of how they use terminology and language to bias the information they deem the public worthy of knowing about.

Since English Grammar ceased frowning upon the use of the split-infinitive (aka Kirk-Spock Syndrome) some years ago, the BBC seems to have made it their mission to employ said clumsy sentence construction at very opportunity.

I've already written about ex-pat cliques in post #14. Somewhat unfortunately I've joined a Facebook group based in and around a local town. The fact it has 'gossip' in it's title should give you a hint as to it's content. However, my grumble is not with loose lips but the type of question some group members can and do post. For example, the other week someone asked what time the local post office was open. I don't know if they were being really lazy but as they were already using the internet they could have found the information themselves with but a few mouse clicks. I stopped short of replying 'Google is your friend'....

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
LIDL, covid, and some of the, mainly quite young, idiots in there today!

Was in there an hour or so ago, and when I challenged one of them, who actually had a mask hanging around her neck (but her companion had no mask at all!) to use it, the answer I got was along the lines of "There are a lot people in here not wearing masks, so why should I?":-doh

^^^^^^^^^^^^

Competition and choice are both welcome but, as you say, not when it means you need several slices to make a pie.

(Actually, you didn't say that, I just paraphrased! Rather well :D)

The sprinkling of sports rights over several pay TV/streaming providers. Football, rugby and cricket all do it, leaching every last penny out of the viewer. Cricket is particularly farcical these days.
And then there's the irony that the article itself is mostly behind a paywall of its own!

I have not bought a newspaper in forty years, I have never paid to watch a game of cricket on the box and I have never paid to watch formula 1 on the box simply because rather than an avid reader or watcher I consider myself a casual reader and watcher and do not trust one word printed in a newspaper, the reporters for which are just political activists. They all lost my interest completely and no doubt millions of others like me, had the companies kept prices in the 'sensible' affordable range they would have had some income from the casual watcher like myself. Yet another reason why I think nobody should have to pay a BBC license fee, it is not value for money and gives me access to nothing but biased politically slanted viewing which is repeated year in year out.

The constant use of the word jab instead of vaccination or injection, I thought it was slang? News media, politicians and NHS bigwigs are all saying it an awful lot. Perhaps it's because it reminds me of people 'humble-bragging' about holidays (or travelling as the posh folk say) when they moan about having to go for their "jabs".
