Not to keep the computer situation at home an isolated one, the other half dropped her mobile phone into the toilet on Tuesday. Lovely.

She did claim it was not in there long and dried it out as per online instructions (bag of rice and warm room for close on 48 hours ) , but the damage appears to have been done, no power up, even after charging and the laptop does not recognise the 'USB' device when plugged in.
There are quite a few photos in there, plus the contact list that I'm not entirely sure is in the SIM card (or if it is it could also be corrupt)

So a 2017 Samsung J3, less than three months old, clean but totally dead. Ive looked through the various stripdown videos and its all to do with dismantling/selling off parts, not about a repair with possibly the exception of the screen and the fully enclosed battery.

I've suggested signing up registration with Samsung and see if they offer a repair /replacement service, rather than go to the many third party vendors around here, the original supplier (Virgin) who provided the 'upgrade' at a discount rate say water ingress is not covered under their insurance policy.

Thanks in advance

Last year on holiday whilst I was swimming my daily 80 lengths a squall whipped up and picked up the chair that had my wife's clothes and handbag on. It deposited said chair into the swimming pool deep end so her handbag and stuff naturally sank to the bottom of the pool. Her mobile phone was subjected to water ingress whilst switched on for a good three minutes. I also removed battery sim, gave a good shake, put in rice for 48 hours but then subjected it to summer desert heat for a couple of hours, not sure what temp it reached but I then put it back in the rice for another 24 hours. The phone was fine however it did fail completely about 3 months later and when I opened it the chlorine from the pool had caused some componants to fur up and fail. Not much help I know but would recommend more heat

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
Get a phone that is "reasonably" waterproof (many Motorola ones are) - and
1 - put it somewhere "safe" before going to the loo!
2 - ditto, if you are going anywhere near "deep water"

PS: my wife is a Type 1 diabetic and uses an insulin pump, which she has to wear all the time (except when having a bath!), but unfortunately it got out of her jeans pocket and fell into the loo! I gave it a really good shake and then put it into a ziplock bag with a few of the silica gel bags that you get with all sorts of kit (and of which I thus have a good stock!), put it on a radiator for a couple of days - and then it worked, and has been fine since:).

Thanks. The other half is expecting me to provide her with a working mobile for tomorrow (school theatre) , so now the 'accident' is now my fault.

I'll ask her later if she can whistle.

I had to stop myself the other week when I said to myself it can't get any worse. Slapped myself and said of course things can get worse, a whole lot worse what a stupid thing to say.

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

I have never understood how people can drop their phones in the bog so easily, so far I've only ever dropped mine in the cat litter once, but being a Galaxy S5 (water resistant) I just washed it off and it still works today...

Maybe these folks are mistaking their phones for toilet roll or something? :-doh

Going to the loo often requires two hands (one to hold the bog roll and the other to tear the paper off), which becomes a "bit of a problem" when "you" (not myself!) has a phone permanently "glued" to one of them! So you have to juggle the phone, the bog roll and the paper, and something might then get dropped - and the phone, being the heaviest and most slippery item, is most likely to be that one! :D

If you wear a shirt and put your phone in the breast pocket (if it has one) then bending over to push the flush handle can easily tip the phone into the basin.

I've never done it and I always keep one hand on the pocket whilst using the other to flush to make sure.

Ah, but then there's a "sudden noise", and all those "good intentions" and well-practiced moves come "unstuck" (PLOP!) :)

Never dropped one in the bog like that but I'm sure there's a negative gravity that applies in situations like that... You know, you lean slightly forward and everything in the pocket leaps out. Same principle in a car.... you place something on the back seat which slopes down towards the back; slightest touch on the brakes and said object hits the windscreen.
