Hi Everyone!

Does anybody have the Technomate TM 5402 HD M3? I ask because I'm thinking of buying one and I have been using a small Medion box for about 4 years since my old Technomate went screwy! Are these as good (or better) than the M2?

Thanks Peeps!! :-respekt:-respekt

William will be along in a minute ....

:D

Peronally I found little wrong with the 5402 in any guise (fans do break, but you can just disconnect them), though I am slightly biased having had the TM1500 years before and found it to be just as good. Similarly the 6800 that I supplied to clients many years ago are still going strong.

The issue will be what will you watch 4K transmissions with ?

Not fussed about 4K really. Happy to watch stuff in glorious HD. :)

I have the Technomate TM 5402 HD M3, not a bad workhorse. Though some HD pictures are poor. I now use the Octagon SX88+ which is better supported. Only downside I know is that it doesn't have a receiver loop through. Other than that is fab for the price.

The 5402HD M3 could have been better if TM had completed all the updates the picture is poor for SD TV also no updates any more,

The Octagon SX88+ is a far superior receiver it also does multi-streaming the SX88+ gets regular updates,
There is a new version just come out:-
Octagon SX88+ Optima CA HD H.265 HEVC

IMHO, the biggest "issues" with the 5402 M3 (I have 2) are that:
- the SD picture is not very good and certainly poorer than I would have expected
- at least with mine, the audio o/p level is not very high, leading to lower than expected volume from the connected speaker systems.

Other than those, I think it's a pretty good "basic" system, albeit with no f/w or s/w updates for the last 5 years (and none likely in the future).

There is a lot wrong with the software in the TM5402HD M3

The picture leaves a lot to be desired HD is not bad SD is very poor,

There were issues with the TM5402 M3 where the data base added hundreds of non-existent transponders despite several reports by me & other TM owners,
The TM staff remained in denial that the problems existed as they were not prepared to spend any more money on sorting out the software,
I had an argument with the Top TM hierarchy that when I scanned 16 east the receiver added loads of transponders in the 11700 to 12500 range
As anyone that knows about satellite 16 east does not use these frequencies,
I was told that I was picking up Amos @ 17 east lol,

Also do not blind scan 42 east as it adds all the East transponders that require a 240cm to 500cm dish as the data base overrides what you actually are receiving,
I gave up at this point sending reports to Technomate on how to improve what was potentially a good receiver.

The TM5402HD M1 has vastly superior picture in SD & HD,
It has with just one major software fault with 45,000 symbol rate that the receiver finds when a low symbol rate is in use this could have easily been corrected by re-writing the software,

Overall the South Korean build of the M1 is much better than the Chinese rebuild of the M3.

The M3 is a decent and cheap little box.

HOWEVER it does suffer from bugs in the firmware. eg -

Certain satellites get filled up with DOZENS of out of beam or useless dead transponders if you even just do a basic tp scan.
You cant rename any channels - your changes get overwritten the next time you scan a satellite.......
Some encrypted channels lock my current receiver solid (even with a valid subs card & cam in the box) - the only way to recover is flick the main power switch on ther back
The epg is flaky in the extreme on my receiver. More often then not it doesnt display and the box has stopped automatically updating the time/date from the tps after its been off

Plus updates both official & unofficial for the firmware ceased years ago, and you cant watch multistream on it

Despite these issues I far prefer it to the hideous interfaces on the E2 boxes. Ive given up battling with E2 - life is too short to waste hours fecking around trying to work out wtf is going on with them. I took great delight slinging my Vu+Duo very hard into the recycling skip down at the local council tip :D

I still use my M3 for feed hunting as it does not override the previously found frequency on 10 east & 7 east like the M1 does,

I still feel that the Korean software writers sold us short of what could have been an excellent satellite receiver with the M3 they could have & should have done a better job in getting the software right the 1st time around when the powers to be decided not to upgrade the software any longer due to financial restrictions we are left with a receiver that could have achieved so much more.

When I think back to what my TM1500CI Super achieved due to excellent software back up by TM the TM5402 series got a raw deal.

Well that's certainly given me food for thought. Yes that latest Octagon looks like nice little box. Such a pity my old Technomate M2 HD box failed as I quite liked it because you could fine tune the dish position. Plenty to consider there!!!!

You can also fine tune the dish position with the Octagon SX88+,
Either by the dish motor in USALS or individual adjustment of each satellite position.

If only the Octagon here had the same ease of use through the menus as the TM series I would like it a lot more.

Perhaps it's only the 8008 but the most simple tasks such as last channel viewed/change satellite/enable audio narration are often a number of button pushes away, whereas the TMs have a specific button on the remote.

Nobody else in the household can use this receiver, so the Elanvision still runs the main dish.

Liking the sound of that Octagon. It's a strong contender right now. Good price, too!

Ref the SX88/88+ & (I assume) receivers that are basically the same but with different "badges" and USALS adjustments: they do have one advantage over the TD5402 M3 in that the both "your" own and the satellites's longitudinal positions can be adjusted by as little as 0.01 of a degree, where as the TM only lets you adjust by 0.1 deg.

Not a lot I know, but I have noticed that for sat with weaker transponder signals here (W. London), that can result in the SX88 showing a slight but noticeable difference in SS when carefully adjusted to maximise the displayed levels.

Sounds to me as if the Octagon is better value! I think this will be my weapon of choice then! :)

And just a little update.....I have indeed ordered an Octagon SX88+. Looking forward to having some fun installing all those satellites again! Also thanks for all your input! All replies have been very welcome. This is always the best place to ask!!!! :-respekt :-respekt

The SX88+ has more than one guise apparently unless it is the German translation (SX88+ and plus SX88+)......

He's correct: Satellit (DVB-S2) - Octagon-Germany.eu

"Confusing" but possibly useful!

The WoS sales page is possibly more helpful to those of us who don't speak much German: Octagon

PS: ref the OCTAGON SX88+ SE WL - I think the hardware blindscan capability has been discussed somewhere on the forum, so can anyone point to that subject?
