VAR on HDD

As the DM600 has no USB I am wondering if I could put VAR on HDD instead.

I don't think this is a good idea, because the HDD is always spinning and might cause delays or unforseen problems.
But let us see what the others would say.

Thanks for the reply HB13DISH but with the dm600 what other choice do I have?
OK the hdd always spins but it always delivers information in a computer.
I bought a 600 on e b a y and expect it arrives to morrow.
I do not even know if it has the option.

Rather than move the whole of /var to the HDD, I just moved the plugin directories to the HDD. This means that you can install as many plugins as you like without using up space in flash.

Also, this means that the disk will only spin when you use a plugin.

I shall put all pluggins on the hdd and see how it goes.
After all pluggins do take plenty of space.
I never use multibooting.
I hope to have all the space for my intended 19 satellites.

Dont worry about space for satellite channels/bouquets, there'll be plenty of room.

DM600 S finally arrived. I've put in the latest Gemini 4.60. Scanned Astra2. Downloaded the latest CCCAM and config. When I opened EXTRA/SETTINGS I found no way to transfer files to HDD.
So there must be another way.
Could you explain please.

Does it have a HDD installed?
Have you tried to record anything to it?
What type of files do you want to transfer to the HDD?
If from PC to 600S, then use an FTP application.

I installed a samsung 160g.
well posted and formatted and recognised by the system.
Initially I wanted to tranfer VAR, but as The machine does not have USB facilities, COMPUFUNK suggested that I only transfer addons.
If I needed to open a directory for files on the hdd, how do I point to the files therein, so that the system could find them?
I am not a LINUX man, but how do I do without having to take a crash course on the subject?

I would use FTP application like Core FTP Lite to see and manage subfolders on the PC and 600pvr
You probably would only move files on the 600pvr.
Don't forget to give the the files 755 attribute.

You really dont have to worry much about space on the DM600. You'll end up with quite a few addons/plugins before you begin to run out.

Anyway, to move the plugins, run the following commands in a telnet/ssh console.

Make a directory on the harddisk that will store the files.

mkdir /mnt/hdd/addons

Move the relevant directories to this new location.

mv /etc/tuxbox/config/ /mnt/hdd/addons/

and

mv /etc/tuxbox/plugins/ /mnt/hdd/addons/

Now you need to set up symlinks so that the system knows where to look for plugins.

 ln -s /mnt/hdd/addons/config/ /etc/tuxbox/

and

 ln -s /mnt/hdd/addons/plugins/ /etc/tuxbox/

That should leave you plenty of room to install all the addons you want.

There are other directories you could move too, but why bother..
