Listen Up Windows 11 - "How low can you go?" - it's a LOT higher than for W10! :(

Microsoft v. Linux resembles VHS v. Betamax with every day that passes.

It might be crap but, by jingo, it's pretty much universal crap!

That's why I said "(at the moment)" - but it'll all depend on how much MS really want's to retain its huge W10 user-base for the future, "force" to substantially upgrade their h/w OR just let them to migrate to the "opposition" (i.e. mainly Apple or Linux)?

FWIW, my wife's 2007-vintage m/c was on Vista when she bought it, but I upgraded it to W7 almost as soon as that became available - that m/c is now on W10 Home, which is just about at the limit of it's current possible upgradeabilty, and certainly doesn't come anywhere near the current "minimum requirements" for W11.

Another three of my W10 m/c's are later builds, and only one of those might meet the current W11 requirements ??

Thus I must be one of the millions (billions?) who might be facing an expensive-to-avoid brickwall of dumping a lot of old but adequately functional kit, and spending a LOT of cash to get W11-compliant kit, or:
- jump to IoS, and face even higher costs in the process - God forbid! :(
- change to another OS (maybe Linux, but in which of the zillions of options, and then there's the "issue" of trying to keep the chosen one(s) up-to-date?)

MS - "get real" or face terminal "technalogical extinction" in an avoidable "head in the sand" approach to your customers (they nearly did that with W8!)

Happy to help on this: Not sure why updating might be an issue - all the worthwhile distros have an Update Manager.

Are you referring to "Win Hate"????:-rofl2
The wifey's Lappy was bought as one some seven years ago. I installed some extra 12GB of ram for her work and to date it has not missed a beat, despite the abuse it gets.

There has been an upgrade to 8.1 in that time but I'm not likely to move to anything numerically higher as it continues to run well.

Hope that's got some decent 3rd party antimalware s/f installed on it because there have been no MS security updates for "W Hate" for a very long time - otherwise, I'd be "concerned", especially if it's connected to your home local network.

BTW: as far as "W Hate" itself is concerned, it took me only a relatively short time to conclude that I really didn't like the user interface with all those "tiles" - and yes, I know, W10 has the same tiles "problem" but you can remove those, although only if you know how (most people don't, but it's actually quite simple - if I could now only remember how I did it! :-rofl2 ).

Anyway
, time to get back to the forthcoming possible W11 "issues" for even newer kit - because that's what THIS thread is about.

As I build my own computer kit up from obsolete / donated or cheap cast offs Im certainly not buying a new computer just so it can run win 11.

Going LINUX then? -> if so, then GOOD (?) advice from @Lazarus and others is going to be in big demand (possibly even by moi-meme! :-rofl2 )

I havent had much success with Linux over the years. All the distros I tried failed to work correctly with my twin monitor setup due to incompatibility with the video card on my desktop machine.

Mint works ok on the old laptop I use occasionally though

First post linked to a 'win8 disaster'

Other posts in the thread mention Vista and Win7.....

If anyone think of trying Linux I would recommend Zorin OS 16 Core (free version)

I been using it for a few week & it really good, even got my PCI DVB-T card working using software called Kaffeine

Maybe I should have started a new thread - but this could also be a "new challenge" in this one!

FYI on How-to-Geek Microsoft Backs Down: Windows 11 Will Run on Any PC

Main point: needs to be a fresh install of W11 and NOT an upgrade from W10 - I might even have a go with one of the older W10 Desktops here that certainly didn't meet the "previous" requirements for processor &/or TPM!

OTOH, I might even have a go with SWMBO's 2007/8 vintage Dell 1525 laptop which started out with Vista when we got it a couple of years after that!

General comment on current W11 experience: Before Xmas I bought a refurb Dell XPS13 with 8th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8550U CPU as previous lounge netbook is definitely dieing, and it does run quite nicely and gives me an intro to the newer system. OTOH, one has to become accustomed to doing things slightly differently (sometimes even reverting to the much older ways!).

A Dell XPS with i7-8550U is a decent machine, certainly up to scratch for general use unless a dedicated high end GPU is needed for specific apps.
I have just purchased a second hand Lenovo Thinkpad with similar spec (i7-8565U) for small wad as a spare for use with a TBS 5925 USB tuner.

One word comes to mind when discussing Windows. Marmite. Less and less users are liking it as the years pass. It’s way past its sell by date. Was compelled to use it on a number of occasions over the years but thankfully very few.

Got a HP ProDesk G3 i5 6500 16gb Ram with 2tb SATA drive recon for €50 recently. Cleared off the virus (Windows 10) installed Ubuntu 22.04 server with TVH and a TBS card and is comfortably serving HEVC streams with hardware acceleration.

I think that old Windows chestnut discussion is well and truly dead.

I bought my XPS 13 with W10 Pro installed because it has the earliest (8th) gen processor (& TPM 2.0) that could (at the time!) be upgraded to W11 and I wanted to "explore W11" - it then did the W11 upgrade quite easily, and so the "exploration" began (and continues). But now MS decides that I could have gone with an older (& cheaper!) laptop!:-rofl2
