If I am away from home (UK or anywhere) I either use a cellular modem or VPN if cellular is too expensive. This avoids untrusted networks and man-in-the-middle exploits which are available almost off the shelf (WiFi Pineapple). The probability of being attacked is low but the consequences could be high (banking). Whilst I might surf on an unknown net or public/semi-public WiFi (inc. hotel) with a hardened device, I would not log in to anything.
Paranoid? Who? me?

I am genuinely curious though. Up until now I've managed without using a VPN, even when I'm in France and wanting to obtain a missed British TV programme. I've always found a way.

However, last month Computer Shopper magazine included a free 12 month's subscription to a VPN (Steganos) and I've installed but not used it yet. There's a 2GB a month limit (how much is included with yours BM?) and I really have no idea how that transfers into hours for watching iPlayer.

If you do any kind of online banking/purchases you would be stupid not to use one, the geo blocked content is a addition to your security,

My GB is unlimited, its one of the most expensive, I pay around £100 a year

Nord for the 2 year deal after converting usd to gbp is about £45 for 2 years.

I never do any buying/banking unless it's on my own network or similar. Never at a hotel or similar.

I did have a very brief use of a VPN a couple of years ago and it was useable in France where my backwoods connection gives about 3 - 4 mbps. It was watchable and it would only ever be a backup to catch a programme that, say, we'd missed on our way down. Guess I'll just have to see what Casualty for the missus takes up out of that 2GB!

If you do get a choice pick the sd stream as it will use far less bandwidth.

That's cheap Chris, do you ever have any connection issues,

@PaulR
As Chris has pointed out there's cheap options out there, main reason for picking this one was for the geo blocked content round the world, some only offer a few countries.

Nord does offer hundreds of locations to suit your needs, plus you can add dedicated ip if that's your thing.

Only downside is 2 "logged on" devices at any one time.

While we are on about banking security I also use these on my debit/credit cards.

IMG_0501.PNG

A would be hacker is not getting my card details or my details from the rfid embedded in the cards.

And sadly I do know a few people that have had there card cloned in this way!

Thanks Chris, I will have a closer look when this comes up for renewal.

Yes that's another security that's easy to breach to the hackers, contact less cards

According to the banks they don't know anything about it!!!!

I friend had private school fees to pay so had transferred a large amount of money to his current account, to be able to pay the fees.

Well he finished in his office lunch time, went and had something to eat at a local restaurant/bistro, And then returned back to the office.

After his day at work(his wife and daughter were also shopping for new dresses, that afternoon, wife's card wasn't rfid)

He logs in to his online banking to find quite a few £1 charges and quite a few offshore gambling sites, as some one had cloned his card at lunch time and started spending on his account!

By the time he phoned the bank the perpetrator had taken over £30,000, thankfully the bank sorted it for him and re-paid the money back to his account.

And he was able to pay the school fees on time.
