Can admin please do something about vetting adverts on this site.

Recently adverts to the following two "semi-scam" sites (for HDS and SkyQ) have started appearing very frequently.

I don't really want to use ad-blocking as I realise adverts pay for the site BUT ads such as these are beyond the limit

Not sure what we can do about these, as they are not directly added by us.

On one of the satellite sites I'm on here state side, the mod's, super mods and admin's have anti spammer powers, you can send the offending spammer message with ad's (unauthorized advertiser) to spam land, and that offender gets an automatic life time ban.

It's called "Spam-O-matic" do a google for it.

It could work great here.

We get rid of an awful lot of undesirable content through the anti-Spam and other measures already available to us.

These rogue adverts aren't messages from spammers as such, but carp arising off-site through Google Ads and other annoyances.

Please let us know the response(s). It is good to be pro-active though ASA have no legislative powers, and their watch stops at the UK border (very much like the TPS), so any advertising from abroad will not be impacted.

The first link is interesting though, be suspicious (especially the elderly) of promos from the south coast, the Portsmouth - Bournemouth region.

There are adverts on the internet?? o_Oo_O

Seriously though - unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it - it all down to Google ads & the extremely detailed way Google have all internet users profiled.

Different ads are shown to different people even if they are viewing the same page at exactly the same time! Hundreds of tiny bits of information about your browsing habits are collated by the Google algorithms & their AI systems then serve the appropriate ads depending on your profiling.

Ever wondered why you buy a new fridge from an online site then you get bombarded by ads for fridges for weeks after?? Thats a flaw in the ad algorithms - the AI is stupid enough not to realise if you just bought a new fridge you are fairly unlikely to want to buy another one :D.

ABSOLUTELY! It's "OBVIOUS" to most of "us" that those (= Google, Amazon, eBay, et al, et al, etc., etc.........) which "develop" those AIs are themselves "as thick as planks"- Thus. to "them", "watch" and "LEARN" (OTOH, if they actually do do that then the "rest of us" will need to be even more "vigilant" :( )

OTOH, recently I've been closely "monitoring" the (pretty obvious!) "phishing" emails coming in via one of my email adresses - and it's clear that the sources are constantly "changing"/ "rotating" their sending adresses to "hit me from another direction" - and most of that seems to be coming from a particular "location" in the US.

Will aim to give an idea of what is happening within the next few days.

Ah yes the Lambretta (Li150? series 3) scooter - my first motor vehicle was a series 2. I failed (not exactly) my first driving test 54 years ago on one because the front brake cable snapped on the emergency stop (where he steps out in front of you) I did manage to stop but couldn't continue and he did say I would otherwise have passed. He did on return to the test centre book me into a cancelled test two days later which I passed. A few months later whilst working on it I broke the top casting on the carb and reading a magazine there was an advert from Val Philips saying he could supply a fuel injection for any bike so I challenged him and he duly supplied - far cheaper than a complete carb. It was gravity fed and you had to remember to turn the petrol tap off before stopping the engine otherwise you filled the piston and crankcase with petrol. So I had the first and probably only fuel injected Li150 in the UK. A great increase in performance and economy (provided you didn't drive flat out) - top speed up from 65m.p.h. to 80. Incidently IIRC Lambretta still hold a world land speed record

Response from the ASA
Thank you for contacting the ASA with your complaint about a website for DigitalHDS.

I should firstly explain that the ASA is able to assess complaints in respect of legitimate advertisers, and can require them to amend or withdraw their advertising if it breaches our Codes. However, after assessing this website, we consider this enterprise is likely be an outright fraud and as such the matter would unfortunately fall beyond our remit.

You may wish to consider contacting Action Fraud who are empowered to deal with online scams.

I’m sorry we have not been able to help you further on this occasion but I hope this information is useful to you. We will keep your comments on file and continue to monitor the response to ads from this advertiser.

For more details about our work, please visit our website, www.asa.org.uk.

Getting some very "weird" ads nowadays - anyone for a private "excutive" chopper, or French language tuition (could be "one to one" - raised an eyebrow at that)??:-rofl2

I know the forum "needs" them but those bloody ads are now appearing after every 2nd/3rd "line" in the subsections and in the threads themselves - and they appear to be getting larger and larger on the screen over time, and so, pretty soon, we won't be able to "see the wood for the trees"!

So, can anything be done to limit the "pixel count" of those ads to ensure they stay at a reasonable size on-screen?
