My Satellite Setup
I have a this setup:
roof mounted oval dish 60x70cm
Schwaiger digital quattro LNB 714401
Kathrein EXR 156 Switch 20510011
TV: Samsung UE55JU6450U
My Location

Hi, I am new here. I am in southern Germany and want to get the German ASTRA 19.2 (normal) German satellite HD broadcasts.

I adjusted my dish, and got the signal from the ASTRA 19.2 satellite but NONE of the HD channels work. It makes me think it is my equipment but I think what I have is ok. Here is the list.

I have a this setup:
  • roof mounted oval dish 60x70cm
  • Schwaiger digital quattro LNB (part number 714401) I bought this about 2-3 years ago and cannot find this part anywhere online, but it looks like others by Schwaiger.
  • Kathrein EXR 156 Switch (part number 20510011) I bought this about 6 years ago.
  • TV: Samsung UE55JU6450U This tv is about 10 years old (4HDMI plugs in the back)

The coaxial cable runs from the LNB at the dish down to the switch then to the back of the TV to the "ANT IN SATELLITE" connector.

At first glance, can someone see why I cannot get any HD channels to work for me? Can the LNB make a difference? Since I cannot find the specifications for this model LNB anywhere online I ask myself if it is HD compatible (even though it is not that old). The LNB frequencies are 10.70-12.75GHz

Thanks for the help

Are you getting all the none HD channels? A quattro lnb is for use with distribution switches. A quad lnb has 4 outlets for use with 4 seperate tuners.

If everything is set up correctly the tuning parameters on the tv may be incorrect. Have a look here & see if the tuning needs changing

I am getting the none HD channels. My switch is a multi switch so the quattro is the correct LNB.

I will take a look at the link.

I just looked at the link and quite frankly, I do not know how to verify the tuning.

I adjusted my dish, and got the signal from the ASTRA 19.2 satellite but NONE of the HD channels work.

Meaning you do have a channel list in your TV, and some channels work, and some don't?
In that case my first suspicion would be mixed up cables between LNB and Multiswitch.

I just looked at the link and quite frankly, I do not know how to verify the tuning.

The column Freq Pol (mode) is the most relevant one.
Freq is between 10700 and 11700 (low), or between 11700 and 12750 (high)
Pol is H (horizontal) or V (vertical).
These two by two choices give four signal-range possibilities: each cable carries one of the signal-range possibilities ("quadrants").

Can you name some of the channels you actually receive, and the freq and pol that you receive them with (probably visible when using the info-button of your TV)?
It could be likely that you receive signal from only one, or maybe two quadrants.
From there, we can check further.

'714401' is likely about the same as just '401'?

Thanks for the quick replies.

These are the LNB settings:
Transponder 12460 MHz, H/L
DiSEqC off
Lower LNB 9750 MHz
Upper LnB 10600 MHz
Signal quality shows 17%, seems low
(Transpomder at 12570(V/R)22000 has signal quality 70%)

I reset my TV to factory settings. Scanned the channels and I have some limited number of channels and a few HD channels which work.

The channels I have include these and others ( i could not find frequency or pol info):
SAT.1
ProSieben
kabel eins
DISNEY
SIXX
Juwelo HD
Sonnenklar.TV HD
Pro7 MAXX
MDR (various locations)
N24DOKU

Channels I WANT include:
Das erste
RTL
ARD
ZDF
ARTE

It could be possible that some cables got switched around on the LNB. From the list of stations which work, can that indicate which cables are switched?

Has anyone taken cables off outside for maintenance ?Is it your own dish and switch or part of a shared system ?

If not, and you can receive some channels at the correct frequencies, disconnect one or two cables from the LNB until they go out (you will know they are correctly installed) and you can start swopping out the others.

The system is all mine. I did change the LNB about years ago and I thought I put the cables on right but I know that the channels we want never worked. Since we have Netflix it was never a big deal but now I want to get to the solution. I will try to swap some cables next

The channels you listed as being able to receive are all high band horizontal which suggests the other 3 cables could be mixed up. However, RTL Deutschland is also high band horizontal which may indicate the dish is not correctly aligned or another issue with the installation.

Basic question regarding setup of my dish. Is it necessary or useful to put my analog satellite signal strength indicator on more than one of the cables as I adjust the dish angles? So far I just checked one cable.

I tried to change cables on the multiswitch because it is in the basement which is easier than going on the roof to the LNB.

I removed the cable that goes into my multi switch High band vertical and the television lost the signal.
I switched horizontal high with vertical high and the signal worked. I preformed a scan and now I have some different channels. I now have
ProSieben Austria
Kabel 1 Austria
SAT.1 A
PULS 4 Austria
QVC2
Canel Algerie
Algerie 3
SBN International
TELE 5
DMAX
SPORT 1
Mein TV shop
ASTRO TV
Sonnenklar TV

And many other unwanted channels.

You should be able to isolate which cable is which with a bit of detective work.

Disconnect 3 cables & leave ONE connected. Scan the receiver & see what channels are appearing

A quattro lnb has 4 states

H polarity low band (below 11700khz)
H polarity high band (above 11700khz)
V polarity low band (below 11700khz)
V polarity high band (above 11700khz)

Referring back to the 19E chart I linked to earlier we can see that:

Algerian channels are only found 12522V & Mein TV Shop is 12480V. (You do need to be careful as some channels are on more than 1 frequency.

So the channels here appear to be on V highband.

(You might need to try the cables in different ports)

The easiest way I found (and it's the method I use on all large systems if cables aren't colour coded) is to start with your tuning screen on a vertical low transponder (make a note of what channels should be on it), take all of the cables off the switch and start with one on the Vertical Low input port (ideal and quicker for you with two people) switch cables until you get a quality reading and then scan that frequency, if the channels you receiver agree with the ones lited on Lyngsat, then leave cable and start on the Vertical High input and once set, the other two with same procedure. It's easier for me as a have a spectrum analyser and I'd be sat next to the switch, but still quite straightforward using the receiver.

That seems easy enough so I tried with with unexpected good and bad results.

Since my multi switch is in the basement and the LNB is on the roof I started with just one of the cables in the multi switch in the port with 18V which happens to be H low (picture from the internet)
1715172022980.png
I tried each cable alone, I numbered the cables 1, 2, 3 and 4 and let the tv scan for channels. Each cable found different channels. One cable found all the HD channels I was looking for. I thought this was great progress.

Here are the results from
1 cable (number 2) in H low at the multiswitch. Each of these channels have a signal, a picture and look good.
  • Das Erste HD (from the website list: 11494 H)
  • ZDF HD (from the website list: 11362 H)
  • arte HD (from the website list: 11494 H)
  • phoenix HD
  • Anixe HD (from the website list: 10773 H)
  • NDR FS HH HD
  • WDR HD Köln (from the website list: 11523 H)
  • SWR BW HD
  • rbb Berlin HD (from the website list: 10891 H)
  • hr-fernsehen HD
  • tagesschau 24 HD
  • ZDF-neo HD (from the website list: 11362 H)
  • QVC HD (from the website list: 10773 H)
  • 1-2-3.TV HD
  • MANY MORE CHANNELS
Here are the results from
1 cable (number 4) in H low at the multiswitch. Each of these channels have a signal, a picture and look good.
  • KIKA HD (from the website list: 11347 V)
  • 3SAT HD (from the website list: 11347 V)
  • ZDF info HD (from the website list: 11347 V)
  • Many more channels had no signal but were listed
Here are the results from
1 cable (number 3) in H low at the multiswitch. Each of these channels have a signal, a picture and look good.
  • Tele 5 (from the website list: 12480 V)
  • DMAX (from the website list: 12480 V)
  • Sport 1
  • Mein TV shop (from the website list: 12480 V)
  • ASTRO TV (from the website list: 12480 V)
  • CNN Int.
  • CGTN (from the website list: 12522 V)
  • CGTN documentary (from the website list: 12522 V)
  • CGTN French (from the website list: 12522 V)
  • DW English HD (from the website list: 11778 V)
  • others that had no signal and others that did.
Here are the results from
1 cable (number 1) in H low at the multiswitch. Each of these channels have a signal, a picture and look good.
  • RTL television (from the website list: 10532 H)
  • SAT.1
  • VOX
  • ProSieben (from the website list: 108312 H)
  • Kabel eins
  • Super RTL (from the website list: 12188 H)
  • Phoenix HD
  • Disney Channel (from the website list: 10803 H)
  • SIXX
  • SAT.1 Gold
So I left the cable number 2 in H low that had the HD line up listed in the first results above and added another cable, number 4, which I put in at each of the other plugs. Every time I added the second cable and ran a scan I would loose channels.

With cable 2 in H low I have the HD line up

With cable 2 in H low and cable 4 in V low I lose the signal and after a scan most channels are scrambled and none of the HD channels I want work.

With cable 2 in H low and cable 4 in V high the HD channels are ok and after a scan I still have the HD channels but fewer total channels than without cable 4.

With cable 2 in H low and cable 4 in H high I have weak signal for all channels then I did a scan and lost all the HD channels I want and added SAT.1 Gold Austria (11464 H) and SIXX Austria (11671 H)

After that I tried unexpected result I though I should identify the cables at the LNB.

I tried to figure out and label the cables. I put cable 1 in the multiswitch at H low , ran a scan, got the HD channels I wanted, then went on the roof and removed all the cables from the LNB except at H low. I had a signal on the TV and I labeled the cable on at the LNB with number 1.
Then I did the same with cable number 2 at the multiswitch and looked for it and a signal at the LNB. That means I now have my cables labeled correctly and I have the cables in the correct plugs at the LNB and the switch. I ran a scan and I have the same results I had at the beginning which is none of the HD channels that I want.

Something wrong, maybe I made a mistake. Maybe the TV auto scanner is not finding the channels correctly when more than one cable is installed, maybe there is a defect in the equipment that only happens when multiple cables are in play.

Any ideas what is going on here?

Based on my previous post ( I did not see your post before I did my tests) can I try what you suggest if the output voltage from the multiswitch is not at V low?

Meaning you do have a channel list in your TV, ... ?

It seems not (you didn't explicitely answer my question)?
As you wrote:

So, trying to move one step further: what type of scan did you use? And what scan types are available as menu options?
And what other scanning options did you use, and are available? Do you have 'network scan'? 'Erase before scanning'?
Are the old channels gone, when you do a next scanning?

I just tried two options and i hope i can answer your questions more explicitly.

I put in 1 single cable in H low (#2). I get a list of 198 channels, TV and radio (free channels). The list of channels is generated automatically and virtually all are HD (the existing channel list is erased when i do a scan). About 30% are "service not available " channels. About 17 are just labeled "." and 10 are "SES 01" 02, 03, 04 ... and about 10 more are doubles (the same channel more than once). A nice high quality collection of 157 channels including radio channels.

After that test I added another cable in H high (#1). The result is a loss of all the channels from before and a new set of 381 channels. After deleting all the doubles there were 118. Here is a short list:

  • RTL television (from the website list: 10532 H)
  • SAT.1
  • VOX
  • ProSieben (from the website list: 108312 H)
  • Kabel eins
  • Super RTL (from the website list: 12188 H)
  • Phoenix HD
  • Disney Channel (from the website list: 10803 H)
  • SIXX
  • SAT.1 Gold

Are the old channels gone, when you do a next scanning?
Yes

So, trying to move one step further: what type of scan did you use? And what scan types are available as menu options?
And what other scanning options did you use, and are available?
I use " auto tuning" which searches and saves channels (old list is erased).

There is also an option for Manuel tuning

I think that is most of the answers.

Regarding "network scan" I found lists of satellites I can choose. I tried to isolate on only astra 19.2. Here are a few of the windows in the menu.

That's my status. There are at least 2-3 channels in each of the V low, V high and H high ranges which I would like. It is not easy. Thanks for all the help to figure this puzzle out.

Ah, OK, some multiswitches may need as you say, so connect all cables, but still start off on one multiplex, if nothing, then swap out for another cable and so on.

The easiest way is to connect one cable from the multiswitch upstairs (noting which port it is connected to) and check for a voltage.

Then you can connect to the correct port on the LNB.

and so on.......

Due to your tests in #13 I'm quite satisfied that your LNB supplies all 4 quadrants all right, when connected to H-low of the multiswitch (needed for the power supply towards the LN:cool:. This also would mean that the 4 cables to the LNB are OK.

According to your tests:
cable 2 = H low
cable 4 = V low
cable 3 = V high
cable 1 = H high (I hope you have labelled this one correctly, because you also mentioned some H-low programs, but these are also available in H high!)

So I wonder: why do you lose channels, when you do a scan with more than one cable connected to the multiswitch (as you wrote at the end of #13)?
Is this a problem of the scanning procedure by the receiver, or a fault of the other multiswitch inputs?

Off course, when a cable was first connected to H-low for a scan, and then changed to another multiswitch input (while also connecting H-low again to the H-low input), the frequencies/polarity of that first cable then are recognized differently than when they were in the H-low port. But you seem to have done a new scan every time after that, and those scans erase the formerly stored frequencies/polarity, you wrote. So that would not be a problem.

Do I understand right, that when you first run only with cable 2 in H low, that you have a channel list that you receive, and that when you add another cable and do a scan again, that you also lose the H low channels again? That I would find strange.

As scan options I see in your photos:
- Scan mode quick (what options can you chose there?)
- Manual tuning (this usually means individual frequency scan, however in your TV that seems different?)
- At 'Network search' it says 'disable' now. Does this mean it is disabled, or that you can disable it (and is now enabled)?

I don't know what they mean with "reinitialize", for the scan.
The TV manual doesn't help me either on those points, I'm afraid...

Your LNB settings are OK.

So I hope you can give some answers to the questions above.

And what I would first do now, is try to understand what scanning options are needed to have the full program lists of the connected cables.
So I'd connect just H-low and V-low, set Network Search ON, and then do a scan. Via Quick scan, and/or the other option there, and/or the Auto tuning menu.
I would hope that then all relevant H-low and V-low programs are in the list, and viewable. That would be a good (first) result.
Due to the network search, maybe also high band programs are listed then (but without picture).
