HDMI Cabling throught 20mm Conduit

Hi,

I need to thread a HDMI cable through a small straight length of 20mm conduit to get a signal from receiver to the TV.
The cable will need to be approx 3m long and support 4K.

Can I get a cable with HDMI connections that can be used for this or must I purchase a mini HDMI cable and then purchase 2 mini HDMI to HMDI converters for each end? I don't particularly like the adapter solution as it creates more joints in the path the necessary.

Any recommendations?

Only a slight one. A mini HDMI to ordinary size HDMI cable should surely do the job as you only need one end to go through the conduit. You could then choose which end to have the mini on.

I would go with the adapter setup, as no one yet has a cheap DYI cable kit for HDMI.

The one kit I have seen is around $350 to $400 USD , and it is a big job to do your own, there are 4 individual cables in the one main cable that are individually shielded, they all have to done up right at the connector or the cable will not work

One other way to do this is with HDMI to CAT5/6 adapters, this requiers one HDMI/CAT5/6 adapter at each end of two CAT5/6 cables, doing CAT 5/6 cable connectors is faster, with less hair loss.

If you have to use conduit.

1) Make it 30mm or larger, then you don't have trouble with HDMI.

2) If it has to be 20mm, make it soft and flexible, then you can compress in one direction and the end of the cable will pull through, slowly with a bit of lubrication (ooooerrr).

3) If it is hard conduit through something like concrete, wait for it to almost dry, then pull out at the last moment (oooerr) giving you about 24mm to play with.

To send 4K signal over Cat5e adaptors seems to be quite expensive. The install is for a SkyQ multiroom setup which will have 4K and a 4K TV. Therefore I want them to get the full benefits of it.

In terms of modifying the conduit - cannot do as this is a preexisting structure.

So, unless I am told otherwise, it would seem like a 4K miniHDMI to HDMI cable with an adaptor is the best solution here.

In terms of cabling, I've found the following after a quick search on Amazon:

If the service provider has confirmed in the signed contract that you get UHTV reception, surely they should be the ones dealing with the finer detail ?

It is SkyQ and they are getting Multiroom which enables 4K reception.
I don't think it would be up to them to get a connection through the conduit to the TV. At the best of times, they don't tend to spend much time on their installation process.

Expensive but could work out better for you, then all you need is a custom cut length of fibre optic cable.

These are overly expensive options. The HDMI plus adapter looks a decent option at this stage. It will work, correct? Going for 3m of cabling.

Old marble fireplace with a marble platform for TV in corner. Below which is a letterbox opening for what was a VCR. Its cabling and power was routed via 20mm conduit from above via a faceplate below into the back of the letterbox opening.

30+ years ago people did not take these things into consideration. This is not a new build.

Yes using the mini to regular adapters should work fine at that distance, you should not be able to see a difference.

Probably not as well as the Cat5e, but that is a much more expensive solution for the minimal amount of 4K channels we have currently.

As it's digital it'll either work or it won't. Apart from a rapid degradation at the cut-off point (the cliff-edge effect) one will be as good as the other. There will be no slight difference.

Also why mini HDMI as opposed to micro HDMI?

Can they really support 4K?

I think a mini HDMI should go through but otherwise no reason.

4K? I guess you'll only know by trying. But if the cable is certified to HDMI 1.4 or, better, HDMI 2.0 it will be highly likely. I doubt you'll find any specs for an adaptor.
