As the title says how do I install a 2.5" SATA Hard Disk into my D800HD.

I am picking up a 500GB tomorrow so would appreciate any help.

Is it just a case of popping off the cover and slotting it into position?

There was some sort of SATA cable which came in inside the D800 packaging - do I use that or is that just for an eSATA?

It is an official Dreambox and not a clone.

Thx

Not done it myself, but I have had the STB open, and it does look like a simple task, and yes you will need the loose cable that came in the packaging.

Go for it, you can let us know how you get on :confused

Ok I now have it all setup - it was quite simple in the end.

Here is a quick guide for anyone that is interested.

Installing a 2.5" SATA Hard Disk in D800HD

1) Pop off the cover.

2) Connect SATA cable provided with D800HD to Hard disk.

3) Place Hard Disk with circuitry facing up (I found more space this side up).

4) Plug power cable on the SATA cable into vacant slot inside D800HD.

5) Unplug SATA cable that is used for eSATA inside D800HD and replace with SATA cable now connected to your Hard disk.

6) Pop back on cover

7) Power up box and initialise the Hard disk via blue button menu (takes about 2/3mins)

Well if the original manual is anything like the clone manual it's on page 43 :)

Ah yeah, I thought that you were talking about instructions on how to actually physically install the Hard disk inside the receiver!

Cheers

Haha,

Alright then - now I am a bit confused. My manual does not have instructions on how to do it. Only instructions on how to initialise the the disk once its already installed.

Paerhaps this is one of the differences between a clone and an original?

The manual (clone) also states that you have to remove the hard drive tray, secure the hard drive to the tray with screws and then replace. But in all other respects follow redout's instructions.

OK, so does one then use the hard disk? I've physically installed it, and initialised it in the BP menu. However, the recording locations point to /dev/hdd and "default mountpoint". I cannot change either, only delete the second (the bookmark). If I press instant record, I get an error message that the free space is too small (less than 100mb) - yes, because it the locations still point to flash. The box knows a hard disk is fitted, it shows it as a 465gb device. But the initialise process doesnt seem to update any settings to point to it, and I cant find the settings to manually edit them...

In a file commander, I can see the hard disk - and I have ftp'd a couple of films to it. But the media player cannot find the HD either.

Apologies for "hijacking", but first post and wont allow me to start a thread!

Have you actually mounted the HDD?Depending on what image you have it's usually in the device manager

I bought a WD 2.5 SATA 320 GB. I installed it exactly as stated in the manual. through BP I initialized the HD (Device manager).
If I press instant record, I get an error message that the free space is too small (less than 100mb) - yes, because it the locations still point to flash. The box knows a hard disk is fitted, it shows it as a 320gb device.

This is the info I have:
Enigma: HEAD-Nov 7 2009
Image: dev-2009-11-07

Should I download FTP editor and modify something ?
Thanks

No, you dont need to manually edit anything. What you do need to do is something very simple. Very simple, and NOT detailed in the manual. Its that simple I can't remember what it is, and I dont have my dreambox in front of me. IIRC, its to do with running the hard disk initialisation menu item, and not just formatting the drive. The HD init item (for lack of the correct option off top of head) doesn't just do something to the drive, it also updates the HDD mount point. Again, from top of head, you then need to reboot the box (like every other ruddy thing you do with a dreambox) to get to accept the new setting.

Dreambox - wonderful idea, but so poorly executed.

If you have poor instructions, just download the original pdf user manual for DM800. It should be on google.

I rebooted the DM800. I see the drive, the size etc ... but when I try to record the DM800 reboots (green screen). Any help. Since I m not very technical, do you need any info (version number, date, etc...) Thanks
