Has anyone ever tried a Hughes Jupiter 1502938-0001? There's one for sale locally, the interesting part is it appears to have two LOs for Band A & B, selected using 27MHz tone. Am I likely to get any signals from it or are these one cable units no use?

Interesting. Haven't come across that one.

Might be convertible to voltage switching of the bands with a polarity switching mod we did on the Hughes LNB -

Iv'e seen them before but never tried one - i do believe forum member @s-band had a look into one of these but saw a problem of some sorts so never pursued it - needs clarifying really

I don't remember this one, maybe you're thinking of the Viasat which is an interesting curiosity but not much use as far as I can see. The Hughes might be usable but a pain if it needs 27MHz, unless Llew's mod works. Looking at the data sheet, it seems that the LNB is a DRO type and from the frequency stability, it doesn't appear to be locked to anything. The high band LO is on the high side.

If you want multi-band, the best option is a Gilat AN8024 (covers 17.5-20.5ish, see .pdf attached) which is used by a lot of Russian internet providers. The drawback to that is that it needs a bit of work to get linear polarisation with it. Otherwise, see Dreamsat's posts about modifying the Gilat AN8002/8004 ODUs

Also the biggest problem I see is the weight of the part. Just using the LNB part won't work and it's pretty hard then. Building a 27 MHz generator and including this frequency in the antenna line without loss will also become a problem for many users. If you can only use it linearly to a limited extent, it's only worth half as much.
The modifications to the Gilat AN 802/804 were much easier to make and the depolarizer ensured reception on all four levels.

best regards dreamsat

Thanks for the replies, to be honest it'd be my first dabble into Ka band, if I could receive Newsnet with a bit of bodging that'd do. The price on the Jupiter is quite low, if it gets any lower I'll bite - at worst it's a cheap galvanised elbow and an az/el mount with fine adjust azimuth I could use on another dish.
